More Cash for Human Ray Gun Tests

The Pentagon is dead serious about getting its pain ray into the field soon -- serious enough to test the system out on people.

edge2.jpgDefense Industry Daily notes that "Conceptual MindWorks in San Antonio, TX received a $7 million cost-plus fixed-fee contract to provide for research support around emerging directed energy weapons... and their effects on humans."

Work will be conducted in cooperation with the Air Force Research Laboratory, Human Effectiveness Directorate... located in Brooks City-Base, TX. The scope of the proposed contract will focus on bioeffects research on directed energy and kinetic energy systems, to assist in transitioning DoD technologies from the lab to the front lines.

Using electro-magnetic waves that penetrate just a 64th of inch beneath the skin, the Defense Department's pain ray creates a burning sensation that tends to make people run the other way, fast.

Hundreds of people have been voluntarily zapped by the device, known as the Active Denial System, with a little, if any, lasting damage. But that testing was called into question last month, when New Scientist revealed that the trials weren't as realistic as they could have been.

The experimenters banned glasses and contact lenses to prevent possible eye damage to the subjects, and in the second and third tests removed any metallic objects such as coins and keys to stop hot spots being created on the skin. They also checked the volunteers' clothes for certain seams, buttons and zips which might also cause hot spots.... People playing rioters put up their hands when hit and were given a 15-second cooling-down period before being targeted again.

A prototype Humvee-mounted ADS system could be sent to Iraq by the end of the year. A modified Stryker armored personnel carrier, equipped with a low-power version of the pain ray, a laser dazzler, and a sonic blaster, isn't all that far behind, officials familir with the program say.

Unsuspecting ? The Gov/Law enforcement are Deploying on unsuspecting People as I type . Asemmetrics (D.E.W.)has been here for along time . The affects are not good after a long length (6 mo) time frame . Your rights are violated . You don't know what is going on and try to explain to someone what you are expireincing . Am currently investigating/researching the expireince and all reaserch so far is correct . Why does our Government do this ? Isn't this a violation of human rights ? Think about how conveinent it is on all Military Bases are located .

i think there is alot more to these things than were told. it is definately covert in such a way that if they ran this thing up in the middle of new york city or put it on top of a building or parkade, most ppl wouldnt know what the hell is goin on with them since it is invisable etc. maybe like the other guy said, sterilization....maybe thats intended as well since the world is so called over populating. this doesnt seem like a good idea to me, probably turn ur insides like a bolied egg

Hello Christian,

I just came across an article about the ray gun on yahoo. I have a question on it’s effect on people who have pace makers and spinal cord stimulator implants. Can you direct me to individuals that might be able to answer my questions.

If you really think that todays military is more brainwashed than ever, and you would think they would use this on citizens just for rallying peacefully? Obviously you know of no one in the military, your probably a Democrat who has nothing better to do than wine about the government and how its gotta be a conspiracy about everything. Seriously todays military is a heck of alot less "DO WHAT I SAY! YOU HAVE NO FREE THOUGHT! ARRRRRGH!" than any other time in history. They actually try to make sure youre not an idiot and can actually think on your feet if you need to. But yes, sadly, there are idiots out there in the military who cannot think for themselves. Believe me, i know. I was in the airforce along with my brother and three cousins. I have 2 others in the Army, My father-in-law was a navy seal, and my Father was Marine special forces. Along with countless other family members dating back forever! You can deffinatley tell the difference between todays military and the military of old. Do a little research next time. Dont go assuming that the whole military is a bunch of brainless zombies. That kind of thinking will only limit you and make alot of people mad. But as for this weapon, i think any new non-leathal way to deal with things is a great step forward for all humans.

This weapon will be used on American citizens exercising their right to assemble and petition the government for redress of grievences - mark my words. It is a very short step from "free speech zones" and riot police running down protestors to zapping them with pain rays. We are headed toward fascism and the military is being brutalized in order to create a group who won't mind using this weapon on their fellow Americans - And Rush Limbaugh will tell them on Armed Forces Radio and TV that they are more than justified to do so. Wake up sheeple! Orwell had no idea.

Posted by: Maturin at July 15, 2006 02:41 PM

I think all the advancements in combat weaponry are good in that troops in the feild will suffer less injury while inflicting maximum damage upon the enemy. My concern is the enemy somehow getting their hands on this or some of the other things we're currently working on and using them on America and her allies the world over not to mention possibly here at home against non-combatants.

The ray gun might be effective against reasonable people, even though they commit crimes.Terrosists and the like need to be "dropped" where they are. These individuals have no regard for life, either their own or anyone else's for that matter.

Once government, always government....
Wake up !!! Lie-ing is their way of life.
I have worked with and tested smaller versions of these wepons and can personally tell you for a fact that they can cause nerve damage.
They effect men and women in differrent ways...
High frequency engery can turn you into a vegtable when focust on target at high power. Think about it. You can't see it or hear it, But you can defenately feel it ! Just testing at 400 watts one day for 30 seconds made me sick for 3 days... Enough said, I'd like to know the real reason ?

Posted by: Arthur at July 14, 2006 01:13 AM

this device has one flaw, hence being made public.
microwave ovens are dangerous because if leaking
affect the parts of the body with the least blood supply the most, first. ( the eyballs & the other balls) a device that could heat under the skin
enough to cause pain would make anybody looking at it for a few seconds permantly BLIND & maybe sterile. so back to the drawing board!

If only King George III had had these, those dirty rebels wouldn't have gotten anywhere.

All Power to the State!

Its a revolutionary concept, yes. but it may be so effective in getting terrorists out of hiding spots that they will end up targeting these trucks with everything they have. If there was a way to mount it into a vehicle like the sonar on a submarine, then it may be less conspicuous especially if mounted into the nose of a HUMVEE or one of the vehicles being tested as a possible replacement for the HUMVEE vehicle. right now it is too large and too visible. For anti-riot measures, I wouldn't mind it being mounted on the top of the truck. It lessens the amount of time it takes to dispel a riotous crowd. Let's see what happens, if we get shot in the foot or get smart about its employment.

First off if this stuff is still in developement WHY, we do we put it on the internet for every enemy in the world to see? I say, do whatever it takes to win but we can't have a secure nation when we leave the back door wide open or (border).

Posted by: Steven at September 11, 2005 08:16 PM

I wonder what would happen to people like me, who wear hearing aids? That would be a nasty hot spot on my head and also destroy the aid.

This is the sickest thing I have ever seen. The USA is a terrorist state. I hope the insurgents win.

I find it interesting that, considering the toy truck in the photograph, more people aren't questioning the veracity of a claim that they have invented a "pain ray." I certainly would like an explanation as to how such a ray penetrates air for long distances, but skin for such a short distance as well as how it would affect different parts of the body with differing skin thicknesses. At the depth claimed, much of the body has no c fibers (the type of nerve that carries pain sensation - makes it pretty hard to cause pain that way). I'd also love to know what this magical ray does to the ear drum, the eye (yes, I read the part about the glasses) etc.

Finally, I'd like to know a little about the physics of this "ray." It's obviously not part of the electromagnetic spectrum, so what is it?

Lets use this on the US/ Mex Border.
OR Canada US border.
& for PD Riot forces & for use in Prisons alone for quelling riots IE Alcatraz 1946 event.
Great use felony class hi risk inmates for tests- save on the Lethel injection mode.
Hire ex gangs for testing device on.
Use on Meth labs in LA, NY, Detroit, Miami, San Juan PR, Houston TX, Denver alone.

Use on Live TV feed???
Use on low flying planes????
Test site for ray guns-Pain rays:
Folsom Prison CA
San Quentin, CA
LA Mens Jail CA.
FT Levenworth Prison complex
UC Berkeley CA.
Sinola prov, Mexico.
Nogales , Mex/AZ border.
Williams AZ
Colombia
Peru
Sri Lanka.

OR use device to burrow into the ground using sonic waves for drilling vs machine drilling units.
(for natural gas & oil).

Hmmm, are these the same Iraqis we went to liberate? Since "crowd control" is not a weapon one would use on terrorists, must be for all those "liberated" Iraqis. Or are those poor people just test dummies for crowd control here when we finally get so outraged at the empire builders that we storm their Bastille?

I saw a movie when I was younger and a death ray was frying people into skeletens instantly. So.... now we've come down to frying people from the comfort of our battle platforms, have we?! What's next, human extinction I hope.

I am thinking that we don't need that kind of technollogy in Iraq. Why not just ship thousands of pigs to control the crowds. They won't kill them due to the blood being spread on thier streets. They will more than likely run the other way.....Simple minds, simple solution...... TOO EASY!!

Posted by: Tex The Infidel at August 24, 2005 04:58 PM

...why is it, that we, the American Military, proclaim from the highest mountain, the latest in modern weaponry, our latest advances in defensive and offensive gadgets to render the enemy ineffective, the direction in which we are spending our Defense Budget in R and D, and telling the world what is needed to circumvent those same weapons ??....It strikes me that, while the best defense is a good offense, it would be an even greater defense if we didn't advise the world of its' existence BEFORE it's deployed in the battlefield...It's great that we have the greatest Military on land, on the sea, and in the air....but, we shouldn't be boasting about our capabilities until AFTER they're in use "in the front lines" !!!!

Posted by: Fred E. Rosenberg at August 22, 2005 05:56 PM

How hard will it be to change that pain ray into a first class death ray... Talk about bad for the morale of the bad guys when they start turning into torches for no aperent reason. I say take it up a notch for the bad guys, and set it low for the civies... go, go, go!

Posted by: RagingCin at August 22, 2005 01:31 PM

I think we should take the modified, customized humvees and mount them on spindly legged looking machine contraptions and make sure they are about 30 to 40 feet in the air, then as they are "walking" over land, and thru lakes and river beds, thru buildings and ramparts, they can BELLOW out ear shattering scary noises with all kinds of external gasses being vented in an aurora of multi colored lights, with creeking leg joints and motor driven limbs, all grinding together in a fit of ill fitted parts.Meanwhile All the targeted population running for there lives with infants and pets and small caches of personal belongings fleeing for a safe haven, any place, any where,"where oh where shall we go??", constantly being pursued by those mechanized demons of ill repute, demons of steel and oil, fueled by the remaining reserves of fossil fuels that lay deep in the folds of our earth, and supplied with limitless levels of hatred and bigotry spewing out there rays of pain in an effective arc of microwave terror, terrifying the populace, all the while searing and chapping those unfortunate enough to be caught in the path of pain, this invisible demon with no soul.No remorse,......... No joy........The objectives not quite filled, but never the less being filled albeit slowly. The burned, the bloodied, the woefull, the depressed, the anguished all filled with dispair will in one voice SCREAM out as one and say ENOUGH!!!.......now this depression turns towards anger, anger towards defiance, that defiance will bloom into a seething hatred, the masses WILL tolerate the waves and walls of seering hell fire transmitted by these machines of pain and as one they will start the rumblings of discontent, hundreds of voices merging into one, chanting;...you opened up pain tonight, were gonna take you out!!,cry the masses, all the while the mechanics of this mechanized infantry will strutt with naught but one thought....m..u..s..t..retain..o..r..d..e..r. Well does this sounds familiar?,Hmmm...........ah yes war of the worlds, the remake by Speilberg, who knows it might work!.Sorry about the rambling story to get my some what off track point across. With regards,Gary.

Alex don't you think they are more likley to hit the guy with the M2 on it rather than the think that hus if you point it at me.

I have said this over and over again, we need to do most of our work in Iraq as if we are police. If we can get what we want without killing then we should look into how we can do that.

Posted by: The Cenobyte at August 22, 2005 10:07 AM

I don't see the problem with sanitizing volunteer test subjects to reduce the possibility of injury during testing. Different kettle of fish from herding the howling mobs.

Posted by: JSAllison at August 22, 2005 09:25 AM

I wouldn't want to drive around Iraq in that thing...why not just paint "RPG Magnet" on the aerial for good measure? Once it's been used once, they'll know it's the pain truck and come looking for it.

Posted by: Alex at August 22, 2005 09:22 AM

I am pleased to see the advances in this area. The ‘stun, not kill’ philosophy is about the only place where human development has outpaced technological advances.

Posted by: tim montgomery at August 22, 2005 01:20 AM

I wonder how much of the 7 mil went towards building the toy truck in the photo?
But seriously, this ray has limited military application and is more likely another addition to our government's arsenal of weapons (i.e. tear gas, rubber bullets, hi-pressure hoses, telescoping batons) that it can turn on its citizens at will with only "a little, if any, lasting damage." And btw i hear getting shot with a rubber bullet feels alot like lead...

Posted by: simon q wrostmore at August 21, 2005 10:11 PM

it's about time for non-lethal weapons. not all situations call for death and rubber bullets just don't seem to be much of a deteriant to dedicated defiance.
