Inside the "Baghdad Bomb Squad"

ferraro_close.jpgAfter months of preparation, and three weeks in a warzone, my entire trip to Iraq has been boiled down to 29 hours. But that day-and-a-smidge shift with “Team Mayhem,” a U.S. Army bomb squad, winds up being pretty damn action-packed.

Booby traps, smoking mortars, rooftop gunfire, suspected truck bombs, roadside explosives, and an idiosyncratic little robot named “Rainman” all figure prominently in the story, which appears in this month’s Wired magazine. Mostly, though, the article is about the battle of wits that’s being fought between high-tech U.S. military squads and low-tech insurgent bombers. Improvised explosives have become the deadliest threat to soldiers and civilians alike in Iraq. So the winner of this fight largely determines the fate of the counterinsurgency.

But getting a clear picture of this tangle has been tough; military bomb squads, or "explosive ordnance disposal" units, are ordinarily shrouded in secrecy, operating in shadows. This is one of the first times they’ve allowed a reporter in for an extended stay.

So click here for a look inside “The Baghdad Bomb Squad.” Once you’re done, you can take a look at 140 pictures I shot during my time in Iraq. And here are some reports on American troops’ morale, and my online diaries from Iraq. Enjoy…

56003232_JM_2043_79CBCF23C6527A807217E89A459CF1E4.JPGTHERE'S MORE: Capt. Greg Hirschey, the commanding officer of the 717th Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Company (which inlcludes Team Mayhem), just dropped me a line. Two of his sergeants, he said, "were hit with an IED yesterday with injuries to their security element. I just walked into the shop from an incident and received word that our Air Force augmentation team was hit with an IED just minutes ago... It is hectic right now once again. Seems like it never stops. Here is a photo of my shot from this morn."

I found a gray structure on my lawn that looked just like a bomb. Like the ones that we see in the movies. It was gray and rectangular and was very scary looking. Since I was wearing gloves and cleaning up here in New York and since I wasn't thinking about Iraq, I picked it up and throwed it into the garbage. However, if it was radioactive then that might have affected my life span a lot and my ability to move around, etc. I should have called someone. They do not make it easy to call them though.

On behalf of the family I want to thank each of you for condolences. Johnnie was an only child so his father Rodger has taken this very hard but he is holding up well. Rodger and I are both Veit Nam combat vets but this will sure test your mettle. I've known Johnnie since he was 14. He and my son were inseperable as teenagers. My son Jesse married Johnnie's sister Norma. We are all very proud that Johnnie lived and died doing what he loved and helped alot of people. We recieved word of Johnnie's death on Dec. 20. The family took the news pretty hard. Rodger asked me to put together a memorial service for friday Dec. 23. If you want to check the web sites, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Cleburne Times-Review, and Channel 8 WFAA in Dallas all did articles about Johnnie. The memorial service was held at the American Legion hall in Rio Vista Tx. Rio Vista is a small community, 700 souls, and Johnnie is the first one we've lost in this war. All the names of our people in the service are on a sign in the middle of town. Norma marked Johnnie's with black tape. The hall was packed. It was a good service and the whole community is mourning. If anyone is interested I'll share the eulogies with you. Jesse and Norma went to the memorial service at Ft. Campbell. Rodger didn't think he could go to that and Washington for the interment. My Misses, my self, Jesse and Norma accompanied Rodger and Georgia to Washington for Johnnie's interment at Arlington Cemetery. It was a memorable service. The Army was very kind to take care of us. We really appreciate all the help from the Army and Johnnie's friends and co-workers. We appreciate all the soldiers from Johnnie's outfit for attending and offers of kind words. Thank you. We support all you soldiers in all your endeavers and your commitment to our great nation. Any time that you need us we're here for you. Thank you.

i spent nine months in afghanistan, while i was there i had the privilage of speaking to many of the locals;we are not fighting islam,we are fighting hate, fear, desperation and poverty.i have spoken to many about islam and have read portions of the koran and failed to see how these terrorist or anyone can find violence in a book filled with peace and beauty.we are fighting a cancer inside men who who have been corrupted who seek power by creating a scapegoat for people who feel marginalized by the world around them;if want to end terrorism,we must confront the cause and deal with its effect, but for now, kill'em all and let(insert diety of choice)sort'em out!

God Bless everyone of our troops who are protecting the United States of America, and it citizens from those who would do us harm.

May the American people continue to support you and those who do not, come to their senses, and see that this conflict is necessary for this generation of Americans and those to come.

I support all service men and women and salute their bravery and dedication. In spite of all that may be wrong with my country, these people are true heroes, true patriots.
One day Jesus will return in glory and this war and all sufferings will not even be a memory...

I am currently serving on my second tour in Iraq in under 3 years. I am fighting to keep Americans safe. Instead of the terrorists comming to my country and killing my friends, neighbors, and fellow citizens they can come here and fight me. Every day there are hundreds or thousands of good things happening in Iraq courtiesy of Uncle Sam that never make the 5 o'clock news. If you don't believe me just come over and see for yourself. To those forigners who want to post stuff on this sight I just want to tell you to shut the heck up. Worry about your own country and the bad thing you do. If you want to be a wuss go ahead but don't cry to us when your country needs a hand.

My son is in an EOD Unit in the Army. He has told me some terrible stories that are not put into the news. Many, many things he and his unit does are classified and therefore he cannot share them with us, his parents. He was 19 years old and fresh out of EOD when he was sent to Iraq. It was the most difficult seven months of my and my husbands life. I just tried to remember what he said to us just before he left for Iraq... "I'm doing what I can for our country and for my fellow soldiers. Remember, Freedom Isn't Free!" My husband and I just kept telling ourselves that while he was gone. I thank God that he returned to us safe and sound.

war is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things.the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.the person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety,is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made so and kept so by the exeretions of better men then himself. john stuart mill(1806-1873)

People tend to forget the world history of CIA Black Activities in Sovereign Goverments like Cuba, Paraguay, Argentina, Iran, Chile, and others unknown attacks that happened before 9-11 and because of the tremendous tragedy of this one event and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I would like to point out that the tipical American is ignorant about it´s own History. And Why Others people or countrys hate the American Style of living. Fear by your Hand. Peace by the Force. etc. etc. etc.

As a Viet Nam Vet and AFRES retiree after 26 yrs service, I have had enough of the lack of so-called silent protests. We should be peacefully protesting the lack of control of both that side of the military and it's controller the politic! I did not agree with Michael Moore's tactics, but when Senator's who control your son and daughters fate say..Oh no not my child..It is time to demonstrate our love of life and the pursuit of happines for our loved ones!

People tend to forget the world history of Islamic terroristic attacks that happened before 9-11 because of the tremendous trajedy of this one event and the war in Iraq and Afghanistan. I would like to point out that in this world Americans, and particularly peaceful Americans, especially Christians have been picked-off in the Phillipeans, in India, and other places. Stabbings, beheadings, beatings,of innocent women and missionaries, and Christian converts, not to mention the poor handicapped fellow that was shot and thrown off a tour vessel along with his wheelchair. Two here, one there, they feel they have the right to pick Americans off around the world, wherever they find them unguarded and unprotected. It's high time America fought back and slapped them around for awhile to tell them to knock it off. If they want to call it another Crusade, so be it. Already we're not seeing not only Iraqis fighting, but Saudis, Pakistani, Syrians, and Egyptians. Wake up people, to them it is a Crusade that they have already taken up the cause against. It is inherent in their religion, just as much as the underlying false pride, hatred, and irrational fear which characterized Nazi Germany. Today we don't think of Germans as being world-class enemies, and in the future we won't think of Middle Easterners as world class terrorists. Remember first, however, that Germany had to give up Nazi-ism to become respectable, Japan had to give up an offensive-based military force to become respectable, and Italy's facism had to fall to be considered Italians again and not little Mussolinis. So also does the middle East have to give up the foolish rantings of evil men and get back to the words of life that promote civilization without oppression.

We all understand that we enlisted in the service for our country. My Grandfather, my father who was shot down and captured by the Japanese and spent the rest of the war as a POW, my brothers who served in the Army, Navy, Marines and myself in the Air Force, we all did so with pride for our country, family and ourselves. To all that are serving now, be proud and know that we, that have served before you are at your side now. Be safe and vigilent.

I spent 15 years of my 20 years of service as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Officer. I served with some of the finest men and women in the world and can vouch for their patriotism and devotion to duty. The only line of work where you don't make the same mistake--ONCE.

yes the military needs to get in and get the job done and get out however the ?'s are now for how much longer and how many more of our children do we have to bury i have a son who has been there and back he is returning for his last tour i pray that GOD almighty takes care of those fighting the cause and have faith that this holy war ceases and brings all our troops back home inlcuding the soldiers from other countries i am sitting on pins and needles like so many other families and grieving along with the whole country my son is in the marines always faithful

As an EOD tech for the Army from 2001 to 2005, I loved the work that we did, no matter where we were in the world. Army EOD units worldwide that rotate into Iraq and Afghanistan for their tour(s) of duty are filled with the bravest men and women that I know of. It takes a very particular type of person to go downrange on an explosive device, in a hostile environment, knowing that one mistake could be your last. God bless all of my fellow techs and their families! I love you all! "Initial Success or Total Failure!"

I am proud of president for making such a difficult decision. History will show that he was right and the lives of Servicemen and women will not have been given in vain. I am proud to have served my country during three wars. I am now retired after 26 years of service. As a reservist I was called up twice to go to War. I went without hesitation...leaving family and friends behind.Freedom is not free. I know the that there is a price to pay and I was "willing" to pay that price. Army& Navy Vet. God bless America and its Allies.

I am so grateful for our Armed Forces and their tireless efforts to protect our American Freedoms. Praise God that we have people of clear-mindedness and straight thinking that see the need to not only protect our freedoms, but will also fight for the God given right of every human being to live a life with free will choices and no fear of an oppresive regime. I DO NOT CARE that we did not find any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. We did find a fearful and oppressed people and they needed our help. How selfish of us to think that we can keep freedom for ourselves only. To protect ourselves only.... With great abundance and freedom comes great responsibility to help ensure it for mankind.

Thank you Marines! Thank you Army! Thank you Navy! Thank you Air Force for fighting for my right to express my personal views. If it were not for you I might be living a life in fear.

Anyone who believes that bringing the troops home will end the violence needs to study history. We cannot just come home. Casualties are painful but without our troops there would first be chaos, civil war and the possibility of the open combat spreading throughout the middle east engulfing us in a far more dangerous and costly conflict. Islam seeks world domination. Look at France today. Has any concession gained Israel more than a few days respite from terror. I weep for our lost son and daughters and thank them for their service. Praise to them.

I served in the US Army from 1956 thru 1980 and that was my choice and I'm proud to have been able to serve my country. The biggest difference that I know of today is that the Army and all the other services are on a volunteer basis. These young men and women are serving because they want to and that makes me very proud of them. I pray that God will be with each of them wherever they are and that they will place their trust in God too.

However, let the U.S get in and get the job DONE and bring soilders home.

May they have a safe tour of duty and come home safe to their families. Safe and feeling proud. I am very proud of my husband.

if IEDs are being set off using radio and cellphone frequencies, can't the Military come up with portable transmitters that scan such frequencies and blow the heck out of them BEFORE our hapless soldiers are within range?

i realize not all are set off that way, but it may serve some of the soldiers i served with.

I have spent the last 10yrs of my life fighting for the rights of our country. I went to Iraq when this all kicked off and I know from the smiling faces of the children over there we are doing the right thing. I had the misfortune of getting blown up by one of these IED'S and have to cut my service short because of the numerous medical problem's as a result. I served as a 21B Combat Engineer and went on numerous IED hunt's and bomb disposal while conducting operation's in Iraq. GOD bless those who have served and will serve in the future!

Being a retired Marine, my heart breaks every time I hear of another American serviceman or woman being killed in Iraq. I am proud of you all, and will keep each and every one of you in my prayers. God Bless you all!!

SSGT Palmer is my nephew. The courage of these young men is awe inspiring.
Good luck, Godspeed. Come home safe.

in these times of blindness and boundless journeys, look towards victory, strive valiantly, and proudly persue liberty. Give our country character, while riding the waves to freedom.

The strongest and bravest people have left their homes and families to do a hard job with honor, ARE TOO, the poorest people of your SYSTEM. There are some Senator´s SONs in Irak right now? JUST ONE. Fear by your own hand.

The strongest and bravest people have left their homes and families to do a hard job with honor. I join America in saluting our incredible troops. God will help bring them back home again. God protect and watch over the Baghdad Bomb Squad. These men/women are all heros.

Fear by your own hand. This feelings become permanent for every american soul. Because your ignorance. Because your arrogance. The people of the United States has responsibility for the government that has elected. You should try to live in peace.

REMEMBER THIS EVENT ?
As time passed and the government put pressure on him, Ali made his stance clearer. He would not fight exhibitions. He would not move abroad.

"Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go ten thousand miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs?" he said to a reporter for Sports Illustrated.

"If I thought going to war would bring freedom and equality to twenty-two million of my people, they wouldn't have to draft me. I'd join tomorrow. But I either have to obey the laws of the land or the laws of Allah. I have nothing to lose by standing up and following my beliefs. We've been in jail for four hundred years."

With time, the columnists changed with Ali, not least Red Smith. By 1968, like so many other people in the country, Smith had turned around on the war, his views on race evolved. Cannon, too, came to see the world in a slightly different way. A young man, Muhammad Ali, was in large part, responsible for their new view of the American scene.

My son spent a lot of time in the convoys in Iraq especially from Baghdad city center, the green zone to the airport. He also spent a lot of time in Balad. He said in general the people of Iraq were very nice and happy our men and women were there. He helped us ship many boxes of toys to the orphanage in Baghdad. He said the folks that donated to us made many happy children. I bring this to light to show the other side of what our men and women are doing in Iraq. I pray they come home safe. These volunteers show the true spirit of what makes America great!

Thank you is the least I can say or do for what all of you have did for me and my fellow Americans. I read the papers and watch the news, but I still don't even come close to grasping what you go through every day. I pray for all of you every single night, and will never stop. There isn't a day that goes by where someone isn't thinking of you and your well being. Stay strong, and may God be with you.

May God bless you and keep you safe as you embark on a task many may not understand but because of what you do so many lives are saved. Men and women of the armed services are the true heroes of the day. You sacrifice your lives so many can sleep at night. Thank you and God Bless.

God Bless and Protect our troops. I understand that parents who lose sons and daughters are going through anguish. I also understand that there are those in the world who despise our way of life and, without the noble sacrifices of those in the military, we would lose our freedom and the bloodshed in this country due to terrorism would soon change the minds of the anti-war protesters; we have not seen major events happen after 9/11 due to the actions of this President. We Must support him because not doing so, although unintended, is providing support and incentive for those who wish our demise.

God bless and protect our young men and women who serve, and His blessing and comfort to those who must stand and wait for them to return.

I had a grandson in Iraq and his best friend is there now. I served over 30 years in the Navy and appreciate what they're going through. I only wish that the people who are blaspheming our President and our position in Iraq would shut-up.

My 37 years of life and freedom are based on the sacrifice of heroic people like you in the armed forces. My prayers go out to all of you and your families (retired or active).
Thank you for your service and god bless you all.

And may God bless parents with the perspective and strength to support our efforts. hooyah, LZ PEOPLES

"Peace through strength!" My son is on his second tour in Iraq - he is 21 years young! I, too, want my son home, however, if we don't defend the American way of life, who will??????
So, continue to pray for our Armed Forces, that is the only thing that stands between "them" and us - God Bless America

faith without works is dead. peace wont just "happen" if we leave afghanistan/ iraq.

hooyah peace through superior firepower. (some things are worth fighting for, and peace ironically is one of them.)
Wait for terrorists to make the first move, and you'll be wishing you'd have supported your president.

APOPO in Belgium are training giant poacher rats to detect land mines in Tanznia,I think rats have potential to find IEDS.Google has the various web sites detailing this subject matter.

I am in awe of these men risking their lives to do this type of work. Absoutely amazing people. All the best to them and their families.

We live this everyday, we find the IED and work with EOD. Its not as exciting as it looks. But proud to be serving my country looking for these dangerous bombs and saving lives in the process.

As a disabled decorated Vietnam vet, I sent my son over with the US Army. It was agonizing seeing him leave for his tour. It brought back lots of memories of going to war in 1968. I love and support him, and support the United States and George Bush. God Bless America.

Posted by: Kenneth M. Boyer at November 2, 2005 02:21 PM

My spouse and I pray for our troops everyday, and I cry at every reported death. As the wife of a career soldier and Vietnam vet, we are so proud of our great, heroic men and women. I will however fight in every way that I can to stop this insanity and bring our troops home where they belong. Yes--God bless our country, but mostly bless the return of peace and stop the slaughter of our troops and civilians in Irag and Afganistan. May God keep all of you in his hands!!
