Name This Thing

what is the name of this vehicle.jpg"I have seen just a few of these around the West BIAP [Baghdad International Airport] area recently," writes DW, who's working in Baghdad. "What can you tell us about 'em?"

I've seen the vehicles, too. And I read about the things online. But, right now, I'm completely blanking on what I've seen and read.

Anyone wanna chip in here?

UPDATE 9:57 AM: That didn't take long. In the comments, LauraN makes a positive ID on our mystery vehicle. The APC-1 (or, if you prefer, "The Rock") from Granite Global Services is a Ford F 550 pickup, modified for war zones. Check out its specs and pics.

Looks like a '39 Packard.

Its a 'Rock'. WWW.GraniteGlobalServices.com it is an incredible vehicle! Does 80 mph and is better than any crappy Suburbhan or hardened rubbish on the road. I got to drive one, they are well balanced and fast a real threat to their competition. They are now building with mine seats, I saw one recently with them fitted. They beat anything on the road in Iraq. The gun port windows are 6 inch dia. You can fire a cannon out of them. And one recently ignored a hit from an IED. It did not even wobble. As for the comment that it would roll 'No I tried to do that, it hugs the road'. Best piece of hardware on the road now. Heard they are sending some to Afganistan and Sudan.

It looks like you could stick a propeller on the back and have a one man sub

LauraN beat me to it. That's the Rock. Go here for more pics.

There was also an article from NRO weeks or months ago.

Looks like one of the lash-ups the Rhodesians and later the South Africans built on civilian truck chassis as mine-proof transport - I think there are a couple of firms in SA who make them to a more formal design for export. They put them at the front end of convoys with mine detectors and a team of combat engineers aboard.

Giant pencil sharpener...definitely a giant pencil sharpener.

Isn't that the beastie the call The Rock? From Granite Global Services? Recently tagged w/ IED that hardly rocked it...

Posted by: LauraN at December 12, 2005 09:55 AM

Is this maybe one of the new armored vans like the one that flipped the three Congressmen a couple of weeks back? They were described as riding in a "bread-van-like" vehicle, not an armored Suburbans.

Posted by: AirSix at December 12, 2005 09:40 AM

I'll Identify it. But, I need a larger picture!

Posted by: Tim Reed at December 12, 2005 09:32 AM

who cares what it looks like if it gets the job done :-)
could it be an armoured observation vehicle, seems it has all round windows etc?

Posted by: elizzar at December 12, 2005 08:59 AM

Whatever it is, its ugly. Looks like a rocket on the back? Maybe they modified the rocket truck you see at the air show's to try and act like a dogtrack "rabbit" to try and bait RPG's as it does 200MPH through Baghdad.

Posted by: jtw at December 12, 2005 08:36 AM

From what the photo shows it looks like a roving armadillo with out a tail.
