Regarding the Anonym.OS: They used OpenBSD (good) but made it look like XP (bad)? Why? The sooner people get away from microsoft software the better.

France's Nuclear Weapons

Wonder if Chirac has figured out that those kids burning the cars are going to inherit France's nuclear arsenal? The French Islamic population bomb will permit them to take over politically by sheer numbers before Iran's bomb becomes strategic. The sins of the French Colonial past will be rearing their ugly (war)heads if France does not disarm.

* Holland's Panopticon:

-Very nice. We could use a system like that here in the states. There was a article in the LATimes a few weeks ago on the lack of guards at state mental hospitals, which get their hands on all the nutjobs who were able to plead insanity to avoid prison. Decreasing manpower requirements would allow corrections people to be allocated to where they are needed.

The problem is that in California prisons, they would attack each other all the time irregardless of cameras, microphones etc. Think of the audio microphones as a bluff in a card game. You fight and you get shut down real quick. But if you decide to call the bluff, you will see that there aren't enough guards...thus the guard savings may not be realized.

The system of dorming would work quite nicely though for minimum/medium security. At the bigger prisons with, say, gangbangers, you'd have to put gang-members together to prevent them from killing each other all the time. The "isolation" of prisoners into these subunits would reduce violence between cell units substantially.

Would it also enable for more units per facility? This question would matter the most, otherwise no dice.

In California we are wary of spending money on prisoners beyond feeding them and guarding them. NIMBY prevents construction of new prisons, thus we must improve capacity per prison unit. If it doesn't do it, then...
