Shocking Shotgun: Stuns Quail, Too?

Don't tell Dick Cheney; it'll only make him angrier. But Taser International has just wrapped up tests on a less-lethal shotgun. Even if you nail someone in the face with this thing, the chances of putting him or her is the ICU are pretty low.

Today's standard-issue stun guns work fairly well. But because the Taser uses a pair of tethered darts to deliver its electric shock, range is limited to 7 meters or less. Only one person can be targeted at a time.

This new "Extended Range Electro-Muscular Projectile" works out to 30 meters, according to News.com. And unlike Cheney's birdshot, this ammo fits into a diesel 12-gauge, not a wimpy 28. But testers said it could be "powerful enough for crowd control."

It's one of a bunch of long-range stun guns that that researchers in America and in Europe are investigating, Defense Update observes.

A different concept is the Sticky Shocker, developed by Titan, with DARPA's support... Sticky Shocker clings to a human target inflicting an electrical stun. Effective at up to 10 meters, the projectile contains a battery which excites several short high voltage pulses (50KV) per second... Different method of wireless stun weapon application is "laser induced plasma" weapon [kinda like this one], which uses artificial lightning effects to stun and incapacitate a target. Initial applications of such technology include the StunStrike, which [is] currently maturing into [an] operational system.

A German arms-maker is working on a "plasma taser" that squirts out an aerosol spray at the target, creating a conductive channel for a shock current, David Hambling noted in New Scientist. Meanwhile, Texas-based Lynntech, Inc. is using a grant from HSARPA (DARPA's homeland security clone) to build a shock grenade. (Here's Hambling's take.) And Taser International is toying around with a less-lethal landmine, based on its original stun gun.

There's no word, yet, on what the weapon does to quail.

UPDATE 2:04 PM: "Eagle Eye Body Armor sent us a release today noting that "Hunting accidents can be prevented carrying special hunting body armor,'" Defense Industry Daily noes. "'The Eagle Eye hunter's jacket that allows free movement with light weight is specially designed for the protection of individuals during the hunt.'"

tazers are currently being tested, especially for crowd control. Certain ones shoot small wires with hooks at the end which attach to a person, and deliver a 5-second shock to them. Tazers: weapons of the future

Chaney drunk at the time of the shooting? Getting your info from Village Voice these days, Byron? I have yet to see a credible report from any source suggesting that he had more than one beer and that was apparently several hours earlier. In fact, the victim himself denied that anybody had been drinking. Furthermore, the sheriff's Office report makes it clear that while Chaney was not interviewed until the following day, the incident was reported almost immediately. Drinking while shooting obviously isn't a good idea, but a single beer wouldn't intoxicate an 8th grade girl and it certainly didn't constitute a crime in Chaney's case. Give us a break.

Good Morning Folks,

After yesterdays interview of VP Cheney on FOX we now have some solid information on the event of this past weekend.

1. Dick Cheney was drunk, again. (Thank you Sinclair Lewis)

1a. The Vice President's interview was a classic AA contrition accept the blame (Step.1) that can be heard at any AA meeting.

2. His Secret Service detail let the Vice President have a loaded shotgun while drunk. Clearly the Secret Service was not doing their job and a full Congressional investigation should be held and people fired.

3. A drunk Vice President shot a man, perhaps also drunk. This behavior is a "Felony", why did the Secret Service, a law enforcement agency, permit Dick Cheney to leave the scene of the "crime" before the local authority arrived?

4. The inicident was not reported to local law enforecment or the media for at least 14 hours. Time for Dick Cheney to sober up, maybe?

Those are the facts folks. Now some questions that the White House controled "Liberal Media" should be asking.

1. Why was the Vice President allowed by his secret service detail to have a loaded weapon while drunk. Is it not their job to protect the Vice President? Even from himself?

2. How much of a roll has alcohol played in the decisions that the Vice President been involved it? Was he drunk when he stronly advised the president to go to war in Iraq?

3. When the Vice President was moved to an undisclosed, secure location on 9/11 was he sober? Had the Vice President been drinking during other times when he was relocated to an undesclosed secure location?

The actions of Vice President Dick Cheney this past weekend has made everything he has done as Vice President highly suspecy.
