Google Earth Tracks Nukes

The lovely Elizabeth and I spent the better part of the last week driving across country, to set up the winter Defense Tech HQ in Los Angeles. We didn't realize how many nuclear weapons we passed along the way: the old warheads at the Pantex facility, just outside Amarillo; the 1,914 doomsday devices at Kirtland Air Force Base, in Albuquerque.

googleearthnuke3.JPGWhen we drive back in the Spring, we'll know. Because the wonks at the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Federation of American Scientists have teamed up to make a Google Earth map of the nearly nearly 10,000 nuclear warheads in the U.S. arsenal.

The satellite map - drawn from this Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists study -- "offers a fresh accounting of the extensive U.S. nuclear inventory, and its dynamic graphics let site users 'fly' onscreen across a sprawling network of military facilities in 12 states and in Europe," a press release reads.

The researchers emphasize that none of the locations is secret. All have been known for years to house nuclear weapons and are highly secure military facilities that do not pose a direct security risk to surrounding communities...

The U.S. nuclear arsenal currently is housed at 18 military facilities in 12 states and six European countries. The highest concentration is at the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific in Bangor, Washington, which is home to more than 2,300 warheads – probably the most nuclear weapons at any one site in the world. At any given moment, nearly half of these warheads are aboard ballistic-missile submarines in the Pacific...

Over the past decade, the United States has removed nuclear weapons from three states – California, Virginia and South Dakota – and one foreign country, Greece. And during that time, the estimated number of nuclear weapons in the U.S. stockpile dropped from approximately 12,500 to just below 10,000. At its height, in the mid-1960s, the U.S. stockpile boasted some 32,000 warheads...

[Today], more than two-thirds of the warheads are stored at bases for operational ballistic missiles and bombers. Only about 28 percent of the warheads have been moved to separate storage facilities, such as the massive underground vault at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which stores more than 1,900 warheads – the second largest cache in the arsenal.

Hmmm... maybe we'll take the Northern route home.

I am just a wife and mother who saw a tv article by pbs about a reporter who was able to walk into places that should have been secure to say the least. After looking on the internet i am shocked
by the things you can find on here. If I could find it im sure a terrorist could. Don't get me wrong i am not critisizing you for this. It has made me more aware of things that I did not know.
I think more americans should get there heads out of ther butts and do more to protect ourselves. It doesn't look like the government is doing such a great job after all.

Break your LONG comments into paragraphs. It's easier to read.

Listen,

My last article was just about modern technology vs. older technology (the nukes). I know that we have several covert teams of intelligence offices worldwide that have installed e.m.p.'s world wide where suspected enemys are. If these foreign powers ever take action against us, we can set off the chain of e.m.p.'s. allready aligned in key areas for defense, supply, trnsportation, and population also. It will be like in the Mad Max 11 movie in La Vauto! What will happen is they will be in the dark, cars, powerplants, cell phones, radios,tv's,planes, all will be non functional untill the chips are replaced in all of them. After several pre-emptive air strikes we will gain full control of airspace. The art of warfare has changed in the 2000's. We have fought in Iraq for over 4 years and have tested all sorts of newer technology constantly.
To recap, if they ever get a missle out of their silo hidden in an unsuspected allie of a suspected terroristic foriegn power we have bat's that travel at a minimum of mach2 that will and can send an emp blast from air. If that is missed we have mobile stations that can launch the emp from ship or sub or sattelite or tank. Even a car or truck near an airport can sink a plane at random. This was a major source of concern on an old crashed flight in Columbi back in 1986. Remember what goes up must come down, so if they do ever launch it will come back down on their own soil before they even get a capable rocket to even reach target. I am speaking freely of N Korea. We could emp them if they even test any more rockets or bombs. Send in the newer mole spec ops teams to seize and thermite bomb the new N Korea test site! Sanctions are not enough. It is merely a meddling political tool to softly monitor supplies and bank transfers and phone lines. Direct action is seizing and/or sabeteuring potential coutries targets or suspect illegal lab activities. The UN has stated that it would be a declaration of war if nuclear testing was tested without their approval. Is Nato ready to step up to the plate and pull out of Iraq and move to N Korea to Back up the Mole teams to insert in and secure the area first for Nuclear Regulatory Teams to pre-determine if missle production is being developed in the underground tunnels inder N Korea. I suspect we have bothced up the inital purpose in Iraq when Bush did not find any or enough evidence of these type of missles in Iraq. But that was the basis of the Declaration of War on tv when we first invaded. First hand intelligence for the intelligence community is essetial so we may not have similar pretense as in Iraq when we invaded there. The pricetag is huge! The defense contractors are getting a large sum now for r and d. So basically all avenues of stopping or deterring war is an alternative with the e.m.p. technology.

ELF (earth liberation front) has burned many new Hummers on new car lots sending thousands of times the polution into the atmosphere. Maybe they are stupid too. The news wasn't that long ago.Environmentalist sued the Forest Dept. to let Yellowstone,Four Corners and other forests to burn, resulting in millions of tons of air pollution.
Also, some islamic terrorists are American schooled nuclear scientists. They are not stupid.
They hate more than any American can imagine. After thousands of terrorist news stories since 1993 that should be obvious. Their whole culture is anti-democratic.Less than a month ago a group of European countries released a statement that "islam is not compatible with European society".
Watch all the news stories on these hate groups you can stand so you think about how moderate islamic groups will come out of hiding and take responsibility for changing islam from the inside.
Wimpy news groups goes after free thinking Americans to blame terrorism on. The real news correspondents will investigate and report to the American people why these hate groups from islam want to kill everybody.
When will Iran set off their nuke ?
Is democracy the antidote ?

Wow, I have never seen such a collection of idiotic comments. People do yourselves and the human race a favor and think before you say or type something. It's not that hard. First of all for those of you blaming Google, it's not a Google Inc. program. It just works with it. Second, it probably makes it a whole 30 seconds easier to find a silo or a place that stores nuclear bombs. You have to be a real idiot to think that it makes a difference that their is a map of this kind. News flash, the evil governments that wish to destroy the US, already know where the Nuk's are. As for the simple jacket bomb wearing terrorist, does he dream of getting his hands on an ICBM, Trident, or similar Nuk. I doubt it, I'm sure he can't even spell ICBM. Now I know your little brains are thinking of some come backs on my comments. Your probably thinking maybe Osama the leader of the evil hordes might think of the idea to take over a silo or Nuk ammo bunker now. But stop trying to think you've proved that you can't do it coherently. Put it this way, not possible. For the person that said some terrioist would infiltrate some small middle American town kill a silo worker then take their badge then highjack the silo or Nuk ammo locker. YOU ARE AN IDIOT. It's not that easy, have you ever had clearance to anything highly secured? I don't think you have. A real security badge is pretty hard to duplicate but not impossible(w/ the right tech knowledge and hardware), but for a guy that doesn't have any real education other that religious I think it would be imposible. Now if your trying to think again, stop. If some one with a technical knowledge of such matters does, that's not the only thing he would have to worry about. He'd have to duplicate the badge exactly(because of the picture) hack into the imbedded info in it, then after that, he would have to pass all the security check points, and make sure all the guards and personel recognize who he is. Not going through security, is not an option. Then if by some crazy magical geni he passes all that, he would have to know how to work an ICBM on his own. *Note to this: you can't steal one of these things, they are really big, they don't fit in a back pack. Also you really can't just set one off or launch it. Too many failsafe's for one person. People you need to not watch movies and video games and think that it's reality. Their are no secret middle eastern Slinter Cell or Spec Op force that can some how get into the US then do these crazy things. Everything those animals have used are low tech.
I have to make a comment on the stupid idoit that said Greenpeace or some crazed libral group would get into one of these places to do some terrorist things. You are an idiot. Do you seriously think that a tree hugging organization would want to set off a nuclear bomb. You know that an area exposed to high radiation dies right? That means everything that they believe in would die. You are stupid. What, they're going to use their Tree Hugging Spec Ops team or maybe get the Care Bears and use their Care Bear stare on the nasty ol' ICBM. Stupid!
Also the guy that said that terrorist can destroy San Francisco because it's not an American city. You are human garbage. It's not funny when terrorist kill massive amounts of people or anyone. Oh, but you mean because San Francisco has a large gay community. Oh, well then thats ok, but I suggest that every city, town, and county in the US with any gay people in it should have a terrorist visit it, and have them blow it up. I say lets start with yours, because I'm sure your area has at least one gay in it. So, when see your little town blown up and your family dies in the explosion, I'll say to myself that it's ok because they got the fag that live there. You are human garbage. Terrorism in the US is not a joke, you piece of garbage.
So to close my comments.
-Google has nothing to do with this map.
-Foreign Governmets already know the exact location of these places.
-Run of the mill terrorists do not care about ICBMS.
-If the USSR with all it's resources could not infiltrate these places, Osama can't.
-Green Peace has no Tree Hugging Spec Op team.
-Infiltration of these places is not possible.
-Use some intelligence before you think.
-AND terrorism in the US is not a joke!

It is no secret from past experience that PBS has shown the nuclear generator arsenal dismantled by the us govt. It was in Phoenix Arizona. My aunt was a schholteacher back then on an indian reservation. To get to the reservation you had to pass the silos and bunkers. The signs clearly marked what was what in each bunker and silo. I agree that this abandoned equipment needs to be shipped out somewhere. Why not use it for the NASA project moonbase for power resourcing? We could put it back into the hands of US scientists once again. The problem is gravity for the water cooling tanks for the uranium rods. We would need to re-engineer some parts of the generator. I think the silo addresses allready are known by the enemys hk-10 and hk-11 sattelites. The point is to track all people seeking the inforamtion and also to track by door entry alarms and sattelite monitoring by our sattelites to who trys to go there unauthorized. Most of these addresses are unlisted addresse if you do a reverse look-up. Unmanned and manned guards are waiting with no prize booty if you even get that far in before getting arrested. Most of our technology today is on secret airbases, aircraft carriers, and submarines. We are armed with far more deadlier equipment that nukes. Hydrogen bombs and chemical boms and thermite bunker bombs laser guiided and heat seeking. We have remote controls, back-up's and self destruct equipment wired in if launches happen accidentally. Take the older phased out nukes and put them in space for the planetary space defense grid. We can aim them at comets, asteroids, and other space junk that may harm our solars systems way of life. We need to expand out past earth and do it by 2026 when asteroid "Armageddon" is scheduled to hit earth. I have tags set up on the yahoo network so go to yahoo search engine and type max1mos111 . then goto the yahoo 360 blogs entrys where i allready have a years old today site set up on q and a on this topic allready. I also have other discussions set up for a newer free energy project using h2(Ca5)2O2 formula for blending hydrogen and oxygen power combined with a secondary steam engine as the waste product from the 1st generator. I also have the tecnology miniturazed for usage for cars as well. We are working on a way to drive this car of the internet for usage by the public by 2007. I have other engineers working in conjunction with me to use this newer fuel sourcing to completely eliminate the use of nuclear power outright and switch over to hydrogen and oxygen twin blended energy, the carbon c-60 boinky balls are jsut there implemented to buffer heat as to use this plasma technology safely without causing chain reaction similar to the nuclear chain reactions, the only difference is that hydrogen implodes after chain reaction and does not leave the nuclear waste for 1000's of years there after if ever self detonated accidentally or by terrorists. Hydrogen is jsut safer. Join my yahoo 360 freinds area nad if you have any personal inquiries go to max1mos111@yahoo.com ,all inquiries are confidential and replied to in a 1-3 day timely manner on any of these subjects discussed in my article.

Yeah, everyone should just relax. First off, this information was already available to the public via the FAS and NRDC. Secondly, there is no way that Google would be authorized to release this information without first vetting it with US government authorities. Thirdly, any terrorist worth a grain of salt is going to have access to superior intelligence than Google Earth. What might be compromising is George Tirebiter's comment regarding actual operational details at Nellis AFB. Why someone would criticize the release of purportedly "sensitive" material while confirming its validity is beyond me. There are much bigger threats to national security than google earth, the FAS, or the NRDC. So please, just relax. The people that handle these things are professionals, that's why they have their jobs and you have yours.

Posted by: Common Sense at November 17, 2006 12:09 PM

I feel that the actions by google showing locations and types of nukes borders on treason. They took the time and effort to do this,, why? Does google want a ribbon? Why doesnt google track the taliban or the insurgents in iraq or tell Israel when the rockets have launched? Do something good for America with your technology instead of betraying sensitive info to the world.
The world doesnt need to know this info.

Posted by: John at November 17, 2006 11:50 AM

Hey, there may be some ordinance there or there may not. 10,000 sites may be the real info or not. Where the ordinance is today may not be were it is in the morning. Somebody has the full time job to keep these munitions safe and I'm sure that there is no fear of them letting a public search tool reveal their current and real status.

Posted by: Intel?? at November 17, 2006 11:37 AM

Why would any terrorist care where our nukes are when they can buy what they want from Iran, India, of the old Soviet states. Note that there were NO nukes in the twin towers.
PS: Note to all you liberal haters out there, free speach also protects your right to hate, as is so obvious in these posts.

Posted by: Bigbucnad at November 17, 2006 10:23 AM

okay!!! this is idiotic......yes, NATIONS may know where they are at, but terrorists use this type of info overload against us!! now, a smart terrorist would google the nukes and locations. then, he or she would then infiltrate the town, then perhaps kill and commandeer an ID card or whatever to gain access......I agree with the above, that tings are secret because they NEED to be secret. SECRETS are so WE can KEEP an EDGE over our ENEMIES, not so we can stiff the American Public. I.E. Boston Tea Party was a SECRET affair/operation. Do you think if the Brits knew about our forefathers secrets, we would be a nation today????? why do you think the terrrorists try sooo hard to keep their operations secret??? not for harm against their so-called people, but so their ENEMIES (WHICH, BY THE WAY FOR YOU LIBERALS OUT THERE, THE ENEMY OF THE TERRORIST IS US!!!) CANNOT gain information and destroy the edge that THEIR SECRETS HOLD!! remember 9/11??? do you think if they did not keep their secrets that situation would have happened?? What this has done, is just put the surrounding citizens of the town or city in jeopardy. you don't necessarily need to break in full force with a frontal attack, just observe the people working on post!!

Posted by: anon_poster at November 17, 2006 10:10 AM

I will blame Google. They are for the most part left leaning and any harm that could be done to this country is good. How is it that Google missed all of our nukes abroad? Why don't you tell people where they are that would be nice. Things are secret because they need to be. In the time of a real war the people at Google that released this information would be jailed. Now the idiot terrorists know where our bombs are and they might just work on a way to get some. If they do I hope San Francisco gets one and not some American city.

Posted by: Michael Gamble at November 17, 2006 09:34 AM

I understand the need for free speech, I understand the need for some people to disclose classfied information, in a warped belief that they are doing good for the nation. Now, the disclosing of the location of all the bases that house our nukes, where is the logic in that. Granted, the "enemy nations," such as China, Russia, France etc know where these silos are just as America knows where the silos are, that's just proper intel gathering of the military nations. Yet, disclosing and mapping it all on google so a terrorist who may not have governmental resources can know decide where, when and how to cause a massive explosion (if capable of breeching security), where is the logic in that. This map is a direct threat to national security for all citizens, especially those that towns and cities near these bases. This map has just given the terrorist more ammunition to try and create a catastrophic disaster. Now not only do we have to be fearful of the democratic house trying to downsize the military if a democratic president wins in 2008, God help us all, you know they will down size the military, have more leaks the a broken toliet and these "secret" and "secure" bases will now be targeted by assholes (green peace folks, anti-American folks), terrorist and any nut job out there. The very nature of mapping the silos is terrible, shows the use of poor judgement and that no matter how many degrees a person may receive in college, they can still be a complete jackass by revealing information that is dangerous to the country and to our fellow citizens. Yet, what can one expect when people only care about themselves and not the nation or their fellow citizen. This map will come back and bite us in the ass, it takes only one crazed individual, one crazed "political liberal wing group..." it takes only one terrorist cell of brainwashed individuals to try and do harm to those bases. This map should not be allowed to be published, it should not be allowed to be viewed by the public, no matter how "general knowledge" it may be.

Posted by: William at November 17, 2006 09:10 AM

If you think for one second that China or Greenpeace is going to be able to mount a successful attack on any of our nuke stockpiles, you're nuts. Also, the information is public knowledge, the intel guys on the other side really don't need google earth to know where Nellis AFB is

Posted by: anon at November 17, 2006 09:01 AM

All of this was made available to the russians and the rest of the UN following the cold war which there was an aggreement to oversee nuclear arms reduction in both the United States and Russia. This has all been public knowledge since the late 1980s!!

The first line of attack won't be with the ICBMs in North America, but with the shell game of Nuclear submarines spanning across the Atlantic and Pacific. I'd say that is enough to keep them at bay!!

Posted by: Gary at November 17, 2006 08:57 AM

Why blame Google? Because it's a lot easier to blame the big money-making corporation than the liberal morons who create the problems.

Posted by: nothing new at November 17, 2006 08:11 AM

LOL. Blame google? Google had nothing to do with it, it's a plugin to Google Earth!

"Because the wonks at the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Federation of American Scientists have teamed up to make a Google Earth map of the nearly nearly 10,000 nuclear warheads in the U.S. arsenal."

Blame the NRDC and FAS (the "wonks")! And the Film Actors Guild too. FYI, China isn't the US and doesn't tell the world where their weapons are stored.

Posted by: Steven at November 17, 2006 08:01 AM

Question - Why doesn't Google ma the nukes that are in China, Russia, North Korea, Lybia, etc, etc, etc? Why is always the US that these monsters try to target? Yes Google is run by monsters(Defined as anyone that LIKES to see humans, including their own families) murdered? Since the United States is soooooo evil, why don't we just go ahead and launch? Why does the United States have to be the one to ALWAYS have our people killed first?

Posted by: W at November 17, 2006 07:50 AM

Nice...lets tell everyone what they already know. We have a lot of nukes. Now lets put it on the map, and show everyone where they can attack. Oh..thats right, the logic is that it is common knowledge. Sure, lets make ourselves more vulnerable to stupidity. I am sure there are some greenpeace tree huggers out there waiting to break into one of these sites to prove there point. Great job Google, and the morons who wrote this article. Idiots...God Bless America. God Bless Free Speech.

Posted by: Sam at November 17, 2006 07:18 AM

If you look at Nellis AFB, zoom into N36 15' 18.9" / W114 58' 13.62" and you will be looking at the roof of one of several underground bunkers. This is where the nuclear warheads are stored. I know this because I used to work on the other side of the double electric fence (in the minimum security federal prison camp that is now closed) and every now and then they would have "Bomb Movements" and we inmates all had to go indoors while they guarded the doors with M-16 carrying air force members. Sometimes the bombs would go to the base and fly away.. sometimees they would go out off base and drive away on citys streets. Most disturbing.

Posted by: george tirebiter at November 14, 2006 02:14 PM

Ellsworth and Grand Forks have none?
Norfolk has none?
Pearl Harbor?
Nothing in California?

Posted by: ted at November 11, 2006 12:36 AM

Well, don't come to far north on the trip back. You will know you have come too far north by the glow in Washintion state.

FYI: While reviewing this on Google Earth is certainly nice, a very cool feature that Google Maps introduced some time ago is the ability to view Google Earth overlays (.kmz files) on the web. Just paste the .kmz link into the search box, and it's there in no time.

Here's the Google Maps view of the above file:
