Recon Planes vs. I.E.D.s

Since the Iraq insurgency began, the U.S. Air Force has been looking for ways to use its planes to fight roadside bombs. Electronic warriors like the EC-130H Compass Call jam frequencies used to set off explosives. Drones patrol highways, looking for new, suspicious mounds along the road. Sometimes they even take out the bomb-planters.

EQG_ewe8c_2.jpg
Inside Defense
reveals another Air Force tactic: Using ISR (intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance) aircraft "to help coalition units round up insurgent cells believed to manufacture lethal improvised explosive devices."

Military officials -- working backward using surveillance video -- were able to successfully trace IED placers’ moves using targeting pods and ISR aircraft like the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS), Lt. Col. Clint Hinote said during a Nov. 21 telephone interview...

[T]he Air Force has used its surveillance assets to find insurgent IED makers, as opposed to solely working to find or disarm the deadly devices, Hinote said...

“You can have a security camera in the sky,” he said. “We actually have aircraft that have that capability of just taking shots of what’s going on.”

After IEDs detonate in places like Iraq or Afghanistan, Air Force ISR officials begin marking tapes of radar sweeps in an attempt to pinpoint the explosion, he said. They then essentially rewind the tapes, trying to discover any movements in the specific area prior to the blast.

“Maybe you can find the car that was involved and backtrack it to a certain house,” Hinote said. “We’ve got several ISR assets that right now are working on this backtracking plan.

“That’s actually led to a couple of good successes where we’ve rounded up some IED cells,” he added.

The ultimate goal is to track the IED maker to a bomb-making equipment storage location -- “and then even further back,” Hinote said.

Read up pal on history, the "MX missile" better known as Peacekeeper has been retired and is no longer on alert. I know because I helped deactivate it at FE Warren AFB in 2005.

Besides, why use a bazooka to kill a nat!

"Well Gentlemen,
Welcome to the United States of the Media. This war was ill advised because it limited our options in the Middle East Theater.
We should be putting Spec Ops, Smart Bombs and MX missles into every terrorist camp in the M/East.
I don't care which country they're in.
Now we need to make a statement or else Bin L's words of how we don't have the intestinal fortitude for a fight will ring true.
President Bush had it going on until he started worrying about the media. What are they doing embedded with our troups anyway? This is exactly how Viet Nam went. The "media" started the attack on us and then the Democrats used it for their own divices. Even though "they" got us into the war, it was turned over to Nixon. We're right back there again with the media even more against us. To the point of Treason.
Everything they do just makes the enemy bolder. They would not have had the nerve to show NVA snipers shooting our guys. GOD knows they wouldn't want to show anything good coming out of the war. That's why you seldom hear anything about Afganistan. As I expected, the Democrats are attacking our guys (Murtha) and looking for somewhere to run. Well, I don't want one of my sons killed over there, but I don't want them coming over here to kill us either. Maybe we should use some of us old guys to help out. I'm getting old but I was a door gunner and an expert shot with a rifle, and I know I could still help out. Unlike Viet Nam, we own the night so take it over. The borders should be free fire zones at night and kill anything that moves. We should have enough electronics watching every inch of that stinking country so nothing moves without us seeing it. Hit all of the countries around Iraq to stop incoming IEDs. And on and on.

And many of you "Americans" are taking the media bait. You worry about the U.S. listening in on conversations. But when they blow up some school or stadium and you find out they were tracking the terroists you'll scream bloody murder about why wasn't something done? Waco, Ruby Ridge (Democratic excessive force) was OK, but man don't listen in on my phone call. Where in the Constitution is shooting and burning American women and children protected. You better be careful what you wish for and be careful who you call "friend" and who you think as foe.
GOD Bless America and ALL who Defend Her.
To Hell with those who don't.

LET US REMEMBER WE ARE ONLY WHAT THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA MEANS TO ITS CIIZENS AND THOSE WHO CHERISH THE TRUE IDEAL OF FREEDOM. I AGREE WITH THE STATEMENT THAT WE SHOULD USE EVERY BIT OF OUR TECHNOLOGY TO "OWN" ANY COUNTRY WHERE MAJOR ALLIES AND AMERICAN FORCES ARE, AND HERE'S THE KEY WORD, COMMITTED TO WINNING THE CONFLICT...LETS TAKE CONTROL OF EVERY INCH OF EVERY BORDER NECESSARY AND HAVE THE ASSETS CLOSE BY TO KICK THE LIVING SH*T OUT OF ANYTHING THAT DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT... A THREE YEAR OLD KID STRAPPED WITH A POUND OF PLASTIC IS SIMPLY
A !BOMB! WE DIDN'T CHOSE TO VIOLATE HIS PRECIOUS LIFE THEY DID...WE DON'T HAVE TO DIE FOR THEIR LACK OF CHERISHING A HUMAN LIFE.. THEY ALREADY DON'T.. VERMIN IS VERMIN.. THEY TRACK DISEASE WHEREVER THEY ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE HOLD AND HOLE UP.. LET THEM KNOW THAT IF YOUR ON THE BORDER OR IN THE STREET AFTER DARK ..YOUR DEAD....REAL SIMPLE.. ONCE WE HAVE THEIR RESPECT, THAT WE WILL KILL EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM, AND ASK QUESTIONS LATER THEN MAYBE THEY WILL TAKE PAUSE TO CONSIDER THE STRENGTH OF THE AMEICAN CONVICTION NOT TO SQANDER OUR CIVILLIANS AND OUR MILITARIES LIVES ON STUPID IDEOLOGIC BULLSH*T.... I have helped develop on the drawing boards for the wuav's or wireless unmanned automobile vehicles. These trucks and vans can be driven off of the internet to deploy the talon bots to detect the ied's. The Air Force's jamming technicues are obviously not affecting our equipment on the ground. The jamming idea is an old technique in warfare but very effective. We are also developing a small non tread vehicle that hoovers to not only disable mines but ied's also with 50,000 volts of electric arc current. So watch the f*** out Mr. Taliban. We are in the process of executing your leader and have killed most of his underbosses.
The war is allmost over. Just do like the Japanase in WW II and surrender. The killing will stop then and you can have your desert and rocks back. The jamming idea inclined to merger with the tert forces down below on land, A+! Keep up the good work soldiers!

Nuts.

Posted by: Carlos H Garcia at December 4, 2006 07:34 AM

The naïve revelation that came from the misinterpretation of the National Intelligence Estimate that the war in Iraq was creating terrorist was obviously made by someone, singularly or collectively, that knows nothing about war or about terrorists or about national intelligence. Choosing Iraq as a battlefield to bring out and collectively align the global terrorist effort was, in fact, a brilliant tactic. Regardless of what the Liberals, the Anti-Bush bashers and the weak-on-defense democrats think, it has provided a front on which to fight the bad guys – taking the battle to the enemy rather than naively and wimpishly waiting for them to bring the war to American soil – AGAIN! (and credulously hoping against all odds that it won’t happen!) After the defeat of the Soviets in Afghanistan and the removal of their purpose and cause, the Jihadist took a break, basking in their perceived successes and falling below the radar scope of the mainline news media. They spread out on R&R back to their respective countries, which numbered over 60 different locations, including Iraq. As the “soldiers” continued training and recruiting, the leaders were busy developing and defining new targets to take advantage of the motivation and hold the interest of these disciples. Many, not knowing what to do with their new-found “talents” and lacking any cohesive guidance, became more involved in their own countries “home grown” terror networks, but always maintained contact with Bin Laden via the loose chain of command and network formed over the many years of fighting together in Afghanistan. Contrary to what the media and guileless Liberal community would have you believe, Iraq and Sadam Hussein have always been a supporter – in the form of cash, intelligence, documentation, and a place of safe haven – of the global terror network. Many terrorists have taken refuge in Iraq during the Saddam years, to include but not limited to some of the biggest and best known names in the business, Illich Ramirez AKA "Carlos the Jackal", Abu Nidal and yes-even Abu Musab Al Zarqawi. Knowing that Afghanistan was compromised after the fall from power of the Taliban and the major disruption of the Al Qaida Hierarchy, a front absolutely had to be established. This base would allow for transparency in the War of Terror that was otherwise cloaked in a very heavy fog and latent with many muddy water holes. The stupidity of some who think the Iraq war has created more terrorist shows just how clueless they are – searching for sound bites and sinister sounding headlines, instead of informing the American people of the true insidiousness of the situation. These animals, and seriously misguided ones they are, have been here all along.

They have hated the West and America regardless of the ousting of the mother of all terrorist and the torturer and mass murdering regime of Saddam, his sons and the wicked and corrupt Bathist party. Invading Iraq got rid of a Weapon of Mass Destruction in the form of Saddam and his family and followers. It provided a checkmate for the original, modern day exporter of Radical, Militant Islam and a country that was led by deranged low-lifes that were striving for and developing weapons of mass destruction, to include nuclear capability. But more importantly, it provided a battleground in which to draw out and make visible all the followers and soldiers of this evil movement hiding behind and using Islam as a cohesive factor in their sick quest to change everyone else's way of life for there own pathetic non-contributing, destructive society. I think President Bush’s vision and drive to rid the world of this pyorrhea – in Iraq and not at home on U.S. soil – should be applauded, not misconstrued and used for political fodder by some who are only looking for political gain. Especially at a time when our country faces the most grave circumstances since World War II. During World War Two, the country came together, women and children worked in factories, nearly everyone relinquished something for the cause – the country had fuel ration, food rations and restrictions on what could be charged for leasing and renting, as well as many other sacrifices. Defeating the enemy, then it was the Nazi/Axis power, and now it is international or global terrorists, was more important than petty battles between politicians and political entities for personal gain. I think it is high time America woke up or we are going to die in our sleep!!!

I want to say that I very much applaud and show my ut most respect for the very resourceful, high tect solutions that the U S Airforce is using to counter the terrible effects of IEDS through out Iraq ! Using high tech solutions such as airiel drones, integrated radar ect can be an asset ! However as a sci fi,Star Wars,Star Trek enthusiast and as some one who belives in Zen Buddhism, esoteric beliefs, theosophy ect and or "feel the force" mentality I have an even more radical approach ! I feel that new updated version of the Star Gate remote viewing program directed by Jessica Utts and Hal Puthoff durring the period from around 1972 to 1995 would be very much beneficial !! A psychic program or "feel the force" program could mean the differance of life or death for many Marine Corps Army personnel in both Iraq and Afghanistan !! How about using the power of Ki or the "force" to detect and possibly defuse IEDS and other explosive devices !!! While my psychic program of "feel the force" method may not be as conventional or as acceptable to may as the high tech solutions now being utilzed by the United States Air Force it could be used to enhance such operations ! This concludes my proposal !! With regards Devin Q Phipps formerly Lance Corporal Phipps

Posted by: Devin Q Phipps at December 2, 2006 03:55 PM

Why do all the people who shout so loud for the allied troops to leave think for one second about the ordinary people left behind. What is stopping whole scale mass murder, meaning many 100,000s,happening, our troops. For god sake support them, back them, win the battle then the moaners can tear into the people who put the troops there.

Being tired of the blame game, one must realize the US depended heavily on Foreign Intel with respect to the alalysis that determined that Sadam had WMD's. If you recall under the previous administration there were cuts in the Intelligence community thus causing a severe loss to the gathering capability. Then of course you have to realize WMD's Deception was in fact being spread by Sadam.

The objective now is to help those seeking a better way of life eliminate the threat created by foreign insurgents and Islamic extremist.

The left in this Country have been out to deceive the American Public since day one. Some of our elected officials in both the House and the Senate are guilty of Treason and should have been dealt with accordingly. There is a huge difference between Free Speech and giving Aid and Comfort to the Enemy. They are certainly guilty of that.

Then you have those working for the government that are deliberately leaking Classified Information to the Press.

Posted by: Been there and done that at December 2, 2006 11:34 AM

I agree that all those in congress must share the blame. However there is a sneaking suspicion that the intelligence was flawed concerning WMDs and the administration knew it. Witness the two chief intelligence officers of the administration were not fired for faulty intelligence, instead the retiring chief of the CIA was given the highest medal available to a civilian when he retired. The other intelligence guru while not given a medal was promoted to be secratary of state.

First, for all non US citizens. Our Soldiers are not following Bush. We have a Democratic process to follow before we embark on wars. Blame each and every Senator,Congressman and all other agencies that was 100% sure the WMD were present. The US military is a volunteer organization not like most European countries that force their male citizen to join. For each and every soldier in Iraq Afghanistan Keep your head down and follow your own killing instincts. For the idiots that keep screaming US out. Too Late we are there and will remain until the mission is completed. This conflict has not been a War since we destroyed Saddams army, now its a gang fight. We cannot deploy any tactics that we learn at Sgt time or in AIT. Please instead of complaining I employ the Russians, Germans ,Benelux countries and many more that have been sucking up US Aid since the end of WWII to get your ass in Iraq. Especially the Germans who have a dysfunctional military or better yet an expensive security gaurd force, because they do nothing but whine and cry while thier Government sock it to them with 19.3% Sales tax. The US Government have pump 1.7 trillion dollars into the German economy since 1950, and thier thanks was to deny our fighter airspace. well when we close all our bases in Germany the 34,000 unemployed Germans thank you. The US did it for yall when the Nazis were raping your 6 year boys and girls killing everyone that they feared. Thank you to nations such as Canada,GREAT BRITIAN (ALWAYS THERE AS A FRIEND) Australia and many more that do more then talk. War is shit no one wants it, but regardless of all the bitching and whinning someone just died in Iraq. Find a solution to end this conflict. Just venting and still pretty much disliking the attitude our NATO (Not A TRUE ORGANIZATION) partner when we deployed

I am a Soldier in Iraq who actually deals with road-side bombs on a daily basis. While I do appreciate the fact that the subject is in the public eye, I hope that nobody with any real info about our abiliies here posts something that will help the insurgent's TTP's evolve. If anyone has real experience from this theater, please keep the info off this site and possibly save one of my Soldier's lives. Thanks.

Methods being used to detect roadside bombs and other issues with the "terrorists" should not be discussed publicly. This only allows the enemy to devise methods to counteract our detection methods.

I saw a nature show about elephants in some African country that purposly circumvented areas that had land mines buried in them. Could some very low frequency device which mimicks an elephants senses be devised to locate IED's buried in the roads?

Posted by: David L. at December 2, 2006 12:39 AM

I saw some footage where three insurgents and their two trucks were destroyed at night while
setting up an IED. It sure looked like it was
using a 30mm chain gun. Since Hellfire Missiles
are pretty expensive and if you need to take a few more shots on a single mission wouldn't a laser controlled gun be more effective?

Posted by: P. McDonough at December 1, 2006 11:24 PM

There is a far more effective way to find insurgents. Get the locations of all IED explosions since the occupation started and use
them as data points in a probabilistic model i.e.
least squares to generate a model to predict where the next attacks are likely to occur. The army could hire a wall street quant to do this.

Good hedge funds use the mathematics of random processes i.e brownian motion to give fund managers a way of calculating risk.

The same mathematical methods could be used to save the lives of coalition soldiers and home
in on the enemy as well.

why havent we employed jamming of all cell phone frequencies in Bagdagh ? why havent we periodically called or activated every cell phone # in Iraq ? we are at war with an invisable terrorist armed force. the faster we can kill all terrorist the safer our world will be.

I worked in telecommunications and radio communications for 52 years and I don't understand why you just don't activate every cell phone periodically. Let them explode when they are placing them or constructing them. You will eliminate the explosives as well as the people constructing them plus possibly their friends. I'll bet that the manufactures have a maintenance code to activate all the phone without having to dial them with individual numbers. You may be surprized to see many homes in Iraq go up in smoke real quick like.

Unfortunely, to be politically correct it takes our $500M aircraft to their $50 IED. Americans have to play nice because some of our civilians and politicians do have the stomachs to do what it takes to win. This war is being lost because we are not united. There are many Americans who would love nothing more than to see America defeated. It is sad but true.

IMPEACH BUSH FOR ILLEGAL EAVESDROPPING, THE CONSTITUTION SAYS HE MUST BE IMPEACHED FOR ANY CRIME HE COMMITS WHILE IN OFFICE, IT IS NOT DISCRETIONARY. SUPPORT INTEGRITY IN THE GOVERNMENT!!

this is probably the wrong place to post this but i'm running out of options (and if it annoys, then editor, please take it down poste haste) but i'm attempting to gather information on the internally transported fast attack vehicle for a "paper" that i'm working on. specifically the american growler monstrosity that's being developed for the USMC. i've hit the project managers websites, google searches, dod webs, US Special Ops websites etc...without luck. if anyone can point me in the right direction i would appreciate it...thanks...
