iPod Armor Update

DT just received an update on the iPod armor story. I can't vouch for the authenticity of the post, but thought I'd pass it along anyway since many of you have asked about Apple's follow-up, etc.

The iPod was how Kevin Garrad found out he was shot. This is the real story.

ipod-web.jpg

Kevin said he got into the fight with the insurgent and afterwards he did not know he was even shot. He said he returned to his bunk after the patrol, put on his earbuds and began to clean his weapon.

He said: “you get into a ritual out there.”

No music came on. He dug around in the pockets where he kept the iPod and pulled out the twisted hunk of metal that is in the pictures. He said that was how he found out that he had been shot during the fight. He was happy that his armor worked.

He said the upgraded armor he was wearing could stop the AK-47 round. It was not the newest armor that is in Iraq now, but it was an upgrade. This was his second iPod that he had brought to Iraq. The first had been damaged earlier and the store would not replace it, even with the additional warranty he purchased.

The pictures are what happens when an AK-47 bullet hits an iPod.

That is a load of shit they should have replaced his fucking IPOD he's fighting for his country. he should at least be respected enough to get the warranty as promised. its not his fault he got shot

Matt

Posted by: Matt Dunbar at May 8, 2007 05:59 PM

if you say you have a "warranty" that replaces the object in which you sell such as the iPod. hold up to it.. because the soldiers that these go to go to people who dont have a warranty on their life. people cant be replaced, these technological advancements can!

Posted by: Palmer at May 6, 2007 08:01 PM

It crazy that an I-pod saved his life when i get deployed i def take mine but Apple sucks ass couse i've had two I-pod which have been damaged they only replace one which i had bought two months prior and it had tech problem they send me a new one which i doubt couse within a couple of days if was giving me problems but good luck with finding a number to complian i had to drive to an apple store to talk to a person

Posted by: Paloma at May 4, 2007 01:54 AM

With all the money the Apple Company makes, you would think they would honor their warranties, especially to a soldier who is risking his life for America!

Posted by: kim at May 1, 2007 07:43 PM

he should have gotten a new one warranty or no warranty. he's out there fighting

it is nice to know that the ipod saved his life and that's God's work. Shame on apple company, he purchase a warranty and still doesn't replace what a greedy company.

THE ARMY SHOULD LOOK INTO GETTING GIANT IPODS TO REPLACE THE SAPI PLATES IT WOULD BE SO MUCH LIGHTER AND COMES WITH ALL THE IPOD JOYS

Posted by: RYAN at April 25, 2007 01:45 PM

thats amazing how lucky he is but Apple should replace it considering the circumstances. i mean, hes out there risking his life and actually got shot so Apple should give him an Ipod.

I want to boycott the store that will not replace the ipod. What store is it?

Posted by: texas pete at April 19, 2007 04:08 PM

All you people out there stop hating the thing stopped him from getting hurt. He is able to get back home to his loved one. S o you should be glad he is still safe.

Posted by: Rick Berry at April 19, 2007 05:17 AM

This is for Matthew who believes that everyone is ignorant but him. The Patriot Act is far more overreaching than is necessary. To suspend Habeas Corpus is to allow our government to become the KGB. To be held anywhere without access to an attorney is unlawful and immoral. Wake up kid. Getting back to the iPod, which this blog was meant to be about. I've heard similar stories from other wars. My question is - who is the store or manufacturer that refused to replace our brother's first iPod. I would like to boycott those SOB's. It's amazing how people can turn their backs on our combat veterans even while they are still in hot zones. How can those creeps sleep at night?

After reading about iPOD armor, I’m never going out on a patrol, out in Baghdad, without mine! HOOAH!

Posted by: Rod Rodriguez at April 18, 2007 05:06 PM

He's not saying th ipod stopped the bullet. The Ipod was outside of his IBA. The round went throuhg the IPOD and the IBA stopped the bullet

Posted by: PFC Andrew Cunningham at April 17, 2007 02:44 PM

honestly......i really doubt an ipod will stop a 7.62mm round. if it can then maybe we should all be wearing giant ipods for body armor! instead of I.B.A. it would be I.P.A. (i-pod-armor).

Ok this is pointed twords Gary for saying the goverment is looking at everythintg they get from the library BS my mom also lives in Naperville, IL and im 100% sure that if anything like this was going on she would know about it. I call BS on that and just wanted to let you know

Posted by: Grant at April 17, 2007 01:20 AM

This is a post that also does not belong in this blog but is a response to Gary's comment which is overflowing with ignorance (along with half the other comments posted on this blog). In your comment, you stated "I understand under certain circumstances," referring to the Patriot Act and the government's ability to investigate what it is that some people are doing. My question is this: What are these circumstances and when is it alright for the government to look into these things? After an attack has happened? I don't know about you but I would rather have the government protect me and prevent these attacks than have some people argue that the government is out to get us. Keep in mind that there are tens of millions of Americans just like you filled with the same ignorance you have that don't realize the government is not going to listen in to the phone calls of all 300 million Americans and analyze every single book that is checked out of a library; that would take an incredible amount of manpower. They only investigate these things when they are given reason to believe that a person poses a threat to the safety of the people. The acts that have been passed to make these "invasions of privacy" legal were passed so that the government can bypass all the redtape they had to go through before the World Trade Centers were attacked. Again, I am sorry for putting this comment in a blog that it does not belong in but the ignorance of many people (not just Gary but also many other Americans) is astounding.

that's flipping awesome man! i think i'll do the same thing, or something like it.

Similar thing happened to my step-dad in Vietnam. He was in the Army and just bought a new camera. While it was in his breast pocket the camera took a bullet and stopped it. I seen the camera and it's amazing.
The camera saved his life but he was mad because he had just bought it. (Don't look for a modern day plastic digital camera to do the same thing).

Posted by: Leonard L. at April 16, 2007 04:19 PM

I don't belong in this blog. I am just interested in what the soldiers defending me and my rights have to say. The only reason I am writing, is to say that Pamela and Gary show one of the great problems in our society. Lack of respect. They won't even allow the soldiers talk about their own concerns. This is a form of taking away the freedom of expresion they want for themselves. How can anybody inject politics on an iPod with a bullet hole. It takes a weird and obssesed mentallity.

Posted by: Lewis at April 16, 2007 01:38 PM

I'm an old salt, so my comment must begin with, "this is no shit", seeing that ipod photo jarred loose a memory of seeing something similar. While in triage at 3rd Field Army Hostpital in Saigon, the guy next to me pulled out a Ronson Lighter, that had taken a bullet for him as well...priorites change with the generation...we couldn't wait to smoke our next cigarette, while now they can't wait to hear their next tune.

Get real guys, Jane Fonda didn't lose the Vietnam war. The military did not lose either. The politicians lost it by putting our troops in a situation that could not be won militarily. Both [political parties are guilty here. Democrat (Lyndon Johnson) for escalating the conflict and Republican (Nixon) for taking it to Cambodia and not getting the troops out when it became clear that a military victory was not possible. My Uncle died over there.

Posted by: koolkidd at April 16, 2007 12:32 AM

Yes the Democrats were in charge during WWII; however, it was a much stronger, more nationalistic party then. As regards the gentleman's impression of Jane Fonda, I completely concur with his assessment. I am a Vietnam veteran and "Hanoi Jane" should still be in prison!

Posted by: Walt at April 15, 2007 07:14 PM

I am a republican, and I am embarassed about it. I live in a highly republican city naperville, IL, and they are now trying to snoop in on what we check out at the library. You know enough is enough, what we read or listen to is our business, as well as whatever we do in our homes, as long as we are keeping it to ourselves, it is nobody's business. How far does it have to go before we have no privacy at left at all? I understand under certain circumstances, but they are taking it way too far. Its getting to the point if they don't like you, they are going to do whatever they can to get what it is they want, and they dont care if it is legal or not, that just tells them not to admit to it in court. Something is drastically wrong here and we need to correct it.

dude, the democrats were in power during WWII...his name was FDR....remember? served 4 terms? polio? seriously, learn something about who you obviously hate, before you start to hate them...by showing such disrespect towards other members of your own country you give other republicans (or whatever you are) a very bad name.

Posted by: Nick at April 15, 2007 06:01 PM

To Roger,
You conveniently narrow down our presence in Iraq to a polical debate between two parties. Look at the gas pumps and see the real reason behind our presence there.

I was paying $1.39 to get me and my life to Tampa when I was mobilized in 2002 to help find nuclear weapons in Sadam's Iraq. Now what do you pay for you gas? I am over seas, so I don't know, but over here the base charges me $3.45 a gallon.

You just keep conveniently thinking the Republican party is going to keep America's dignity and integrity in tact while they encourage America's best to die for their portfolios. I hope you're not in charge of anything, or more important, anyone.
Your bother in arms.

So lemme get this right. your love of Jimmy Hendrix kept you alive. Well " Purple Haze, Has stained my brain." Jimmy hendrix ressurected from the vetnam era lives again in Iraq! Apple I-pods are made of titanium on the back? Reminds me of the body armour debate witht he quick release velcroe to replace armour parts. Has someone contacted Apple to see what is the metal misture for the back plate? Most conventional armour cannot stop a ak-47 . This is large! Bdu's need to be realigned , so to speak, like the armour on knights back in mideval days by the squires and paiges. Get on it researchers, This one thin plate will stop a high velocity round!

I am 18 in 8 days, and signing for the Army with Intelligence. Having talked to several soldiers (including a few Intel luckily) and thanking them for serving and hearing stories about Iraq, I understand that we need to be over there and get the job done. In the stores I hear people talking about the war and how they think we should pull out of there, but when I say something to them about it and what I have heard, they immediately shut up. I have won several debates over the war on terrorism and our situation in Iraq. I have also seen statistics on the internet saying for the area that I live in (albany, ny) that the infantryman are statistically at the same level where people are dieing from gunshots here in the city. I am fully supporting the war, if we pull out now we will lose all that we have worked for over there.

Politics is once again driving the military "ala Vietnam", current administration is no different than Congress in this dog fight! We got the mission, give us 100% of your support plus some and get the hell out of the way. We'll call when we're finished and it won't take years

Posted by: George Putnam at April 15, 2007 09:46 AM

A retired military man I know made a profound statement one day while we were discussing the current situtation in Iraq, he said the following, "Every person from age 18 on up should have to have worn a uniform to validate their American citizenship". This is not a bad idea, I am sure it would cut down on the mush heads both male and female who take to the streets protesting the freedoms that men and women who have worn the uniform, walked the walk and talked the talk provide them. If one is so unhappy with the freedom given them by our military, please go to another country and try their life style or even try marching in their streets protesting it if it did not suite your needs.

Really, who cares what stopped the bullet as long as it was something?

This is a man, serving our country... Regardless of your beliefs, you ought to be proud and respectful to these men and women.

Posted by: The Proud Army Wife at April 15, 2007 07:11 AM

I completely agree with you, steve. By the way, I'm Christian. If you believe something else, more power to you. Whatever your belief, isn't religion supposed to teach compassion and love for everyone, even if their different. The world would be a much better place if some of these people would practice what they preach. There are good and bad people in every group in existence. Try and make someone elses life better before you help yourself.

If more people were willing to do something instead of complaining the world, let alone the country I love, would be great. Those of you in the streets protesting, STOP and feed that homeless guy on the corner that you had to step over.

Posted by: george taylor at April 15, 2007 02:17 AM

I am glad that some people are blaming athiest and Christians for not respecting other peoples religions to be that cause of our war in Iraq. I am athiest and I dont playdown anybody's religion. I feel it everybody's personal chioce as to what they believe. And it is none of my buisness what they practice as long as it is not harming other's.

So maybe some people need to stop using their first ammendment rights so much and try putting that limited brain power to better uses such as maybe helping the world instead of complaining about it. Whinning and protetsting isnt going to change anuthing in this world if people arent willing to put themselves in HARMS WAY to make changes. Not being afraid to physically go out and and get your hands dirty doing the teaching, digging and construction to help make a difference is the only way to positivily make a change. Sitting around chanting with a sign in the safety of the street just shows you are to much of a coward to what you mean.

Richard obviously you have never served your country in any capacity or you would know that all of our freedom's come from the brave men and women willing to do harm to our enemies so you can spout your hateful vitriol.I just reieved my 25 year's of government service pin and letter of appreciation today and I say to "dick" maybe you and all of your liberal friend's who hate this country so much should go live over there with all of those other hater's of freedom;I mean come on do have the COURAGE of your conviction's or are you a typical liberal blowhard ,all mouth and no sand in your bottom? this is too Richard.. You said bring them home.. ( or close ).. Do you love your freedom? Is the fact that they are killing each other OVER THERE and not here bothering you.. ? Are you scared to walk into a market and shop freely? Guess what.. we have this freedom because we are over there. Lets all forget about being right wing or left wing.. Lets remember that as long as they are over there they are not here... I agree it is unfortunate that our troops are in harms way ,but at least the crazies are there and our troops are brave enough to confront them there and not have to deal with them here.... Just a thought

I'm glad someone finally took the time to point out that his armour stopped the bullet and not the iPod, as all the others posters seemed to have missed.

Posted by: DEVGRU at April 14, 2007 10:22 PM

I can't believe I just read through the entire comments list and only 3 people in the last 2/3 of the comments realized that his Ipod did NOT stop the bullet. He was wearing the ipod in a pocket outside of the armor, and it was the armor that stopped the round.

"No music came on.

On a few other notes...

1. Someone did take the time to follow up on the article and APPLE did end up replacing the Ipod... The warranty was not honored by the retailer he purchased it from. Also, he had the extended warrany on his first Ipod, not this one.

2. As a former reservist, (No, I did not see action, though 90% of my unit was deployed at one point or another) let me say 2 things from what my fellow unit members experienced. A) You cannot leave anything of value behind, because they grow legs faster than anything Mr. Darwin predicted. B) To those who disparage the war, and think that us enlisted men and women are there against our will, not one person from my unit deployed without specifically volunteering for the tour itself, not just the Implied consent by enlisting in the armed forces.

3. Never doubt the ingenuity of our troops. Choosing to replace the Ipod was doubtless a difficult choice for Apple, not because of any intrinsic greed, but simply because people who heard about this may seek out a free replacement after theirs got "accidentally" shot the day after it got stepped on or otherwise KIA.

4. To all of the bible thumpers AND athiests. A failure to RESPECT other peoples beliefs is at the root of the thousands of years plus of conflict in the middle east, and nearly every other religious or ideological conflict worldwide. Our country's founding may have been by a group of primarily ?protestant? white men, but the underlying ideal was that everyone could practice their faith without having their beliefs mandated by the government, insofar as those beliefs did not have direct negative consequences on those around them. (rape, murder and theft are principles that nearly every faith or lack of faith can see as bad for everyone)

I apologise for the long rant, but hope that some may take the time to think about what is really important in their lives and thank whomever they feel is responsible for their joy.

Some local Apple store or Apple Corp. should relace it for you. Of course if they take any publicity for it, some dolt may intentionally destroy theirs for a free replacement.

At any rate, if they don't replace it, contact me, through your chain of command, and I'll buy you one.

Anyone with contacts within the unit please forward this information.

Posted by: Jon at April 14, 2007 04:14 PM

I sold iPods for Apple at one time. The sad truth is this country is built on profit margin. iPods, and the ever present manufacture and extended warranty are as revenue generating as the iPod device itself. Personally, as a veteran myself, there is comfort in your interesting experience. Thanks for all you do in your fight for freedom.

AK-47. I am sure that Apple will reimburse you with a letter and that photo, however the I-pod is secondary to your life. Say a prayer to give thanks to the Man upstairs and we will continue to pray for the safe return of all of our service Men and Women.

Dang i didnt even know that ipods were thta strong i mean sometimes if you drop[ them threy break. You totally were saved fro mthe big man upstairs. And about the app;le company. I say they are just not wanting to replace it cause ten they would loose money cause they cant have that one sent into the company to be fixed causes it was shot. I say you write them aletter talking about it. Hoping you all come back safe.

War clause. Only a few insurance companies don't have one. Apple ipod insurance is no different than the many others that did not pay out for 9/11. Insurance is invalid in acts of war or terrorism with that clause. If you are a soldier or a vet only buy insurance through companies the support us. Those few companies don't have war clauses and you can take your electronics to Iraq and they will be covered under your renter's policy. I refused Apple's extended warranty because of that.

Posted by: MaryAnn at April 14, 2007 12:00 PM

Wow man I can't believe what happened. But rest a sure that the one who really protected you was the man upstairs and not the ipod. It's hard to understand something so expensive with extended warranty to not be covered in some way. If you let them know you advertised for them with this story I feel they should give you a new replacement. Stay positive and in your mind see you having the free replacement ipod in your hands and it will happen trust me. God bless you and all who are serving for our country! Have a safe return home man.

Posted by: Oscar Stover at April 14, 2007 11:53 AM

I have been shot in both a translator and a dogtag before and the company said bullet holes are not covered under warranty. I am sure if you send a letter to apple they may give you some compensation if not a replacement now that they are supporting the troops with discounts. In addition they may ask for the rights to use your damaged one to show how rugged the IPOD is in comparrison to the competition. It broke yes but it prevented you from getting wounded. Either way stay sharp and I wish you all a safe return home.

Posted by: George Theophile at April 14, 2007 10:29 AM

Like the rest of us I am happy to learn of his safety. However, concerning the Apple corporation, I think it is disgusting to know that even after this brave young man purchased a warranty for the first IPod this heartless corporation did not honor it's commitment to his warranty, and as he is putting his life on the line for his country, the deplorable actions of this, and I'm sure other major corporations, are only concerned with their profit margin and show their lack of patriotism by forcing this, and probably other brave young people to contribute to their bottom line without regard to individual circumstances. This I believe to be shameful!

I would like to start by saying thank you to all the members of the military that are currently serving stateside and over seas. Your sacrifice means more than you could possibly imagine to those of us who have served and those that have not.
I work for an Apple authorized service center and would like to make this right. If anyone out there can confirm this story with solid evidence and get me some contact ifo for this soldier I would like the opportunity to get this replaced.
Again, thank you for your service to this country.

Why all the anger!!!
It's just a beautiful story, great PR for iPOD
Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Coast Guard, all of them are protecting our way of life here in the U.S. I do not always agree with the Defense Department (I spent 8 months in Saudi, Iraq, Kuwait) didn't like it, but did it because I was ordered to.
I am no Genius, and would not want the responsibility of The Commander in Chief, (that cannot be an easy job) "damned if you do, damned if you don't" (send a signal to the World "Don't mess with the USA" psychologicaly perplexing if you ask me)
The USA Wrong or Right in policy is a nice place to live. Living in Europe for 16 years like I did while stationed there was great fun, I Loved it there, but it was very expensive) here in the USA I enjoy a nice little house on a nice big piece of land, with my lovely Bavarian wife!
It's guys like me and all the other service men that make this possible. THANK YOU!!!!!

P.S. and we do it for ourselves, our families, you, your families, all the ones who hate us, Love us, all citizens, legal aliens, visitors, you get my point.

Unfortunately, Mark from FOB Rusty, despite your intelligent and highly-swaying argument, young soldiers, in fact, DO need to be monitored to ensure they're doing the right thing.

I caught one of my gunners wearing his Ipod outside the wire six months into our deployment. You'd think he'd know better by then. Well, after I smoked the living dog-snot out of him for about an hour, the rest of the squad never even thought about it.

Unfortunately, the job of an NCO is often saving their men from themselves. If not given proper guidance and training, troops WILL make the wrong decisions. I've seen guys in other convoys reading Maxim magazines in the turrets while outside the wire. Why? Because they're young, they think they have the whole world figured out by age 18, and they just don't know any better.

By the way, there is NO reason for this guy to have his Ipod on his body armor in the first place. He needs to leave it back in the hooch.

Posted by: Oldvet at April 14, 2007 06:48 AM

Seriously Mark (FOB RUSTY) should chill out. He went crazy about a rant that had nothing to do about the story. Ok, an IPOD saved a dudes life. That's great. Let people make up their own oppinion about if "God was there". Why does it matter what people believe? Does it offend you that much that there is an opinion that is different than yours? This is insecurity at the highest level. People thinking different than you is their choice and thier right and thank God for it. You sound like a closed mind idiot that is offended by thoughts of religion because you can't comprehend what's going on and fear any thought that's different than your own. This saddens me.

Ok bible thumpers! First of all let me say that religion is the ROOT of all thats evil! Oh ya I said it! Why the hell do you think these people are killing themselves over here?? Hell, if you christians were able to in the states you would brain wash everyone with your mindless B.S. Funny story here, about a tornado that wiped out a town including a church (which I found quite amusing) but left one house in tact. Well the lady spoke in a news report and said that god had his hand over her house! HA HA!!! She musta been some special kinda lady huh? Quit tryin to spoon feed us your religious crap and keep it to yourself. Because if you go on and tell me that you never had sex in something other than the missionary position Im gonna raise the B.S. flag sinner!! The truth of the matter is that you need religion as a crutch to make it through your miserable lives to make you feel better about yourselves. Religion does not belong in politics, it clouts the judgment of commone sense. Hell, I can probably write a book and call it the bible. 1500 years from now...people would worship me!! Get off you religious high horses people and look at why people are getting killed out here! Bottom line.....RELIGION!!!!! I dont even know why I try and pound this into you brainwashed minds.

As for the Ipod the Marine had on him while on patrol. Rock on brother! We know you didnt have it in your ears. Marines,Soldiers,Airmen,Seamen,ETC dont need our team leaders to micro manage them and strip search em for a damn IPOD. Although it makes you feel ohhh so powerfull.....maybe you should thank your lucky stars they listen so some METALICA before heading out....they might just have your back then!

Do I think Apple should replace the IPOD? Hell yes I do!! Why? Because its great PR! Its the right damn thing to do! Do I think that they should replace every swingin johnsons IPOD that got ran over by a hummer or stepped on? Of course not!! The dude got shot and the Ipod took the bullet. If you ask me thats some cool ass s$%t! The fact that the dude is still alive and the ipod has a bullet hole in it! Thats a hell of a story!

My last and final statement! SCREW NANCY PALOSI AND ALL HER JACKASS BUDDIES!! Typical woman, tryin to make nice! They love to say, sure Nancy we will play nice...he he he he!! What a mindless dope! In the end she will be the one who gets people killed. Its not that hard to figure out!!

Lol... This kind of quick temperament is the exactly the reason I believe we always send in the Marines to get shot first.

To the guy saying that we talk about Jesus and God as though they are facts... tell me... what facts point to disproving that 1. God exists and 2. that Jesus didnt do the miraculous stuff he did. You find some facts that disprove our facts, and well shut up.

Why was a ipod on patrol to begin with, but if it hadn't been there who knows the bullet may have penetrated the body armor. The iPod cause the bullet to expend energy before the body armor, possibly saving his life.

My question WHY WAS AN IPOD ON PATROL WITH YOU ANYWAY? fire the platoon sgt and squad leader for not conducting a good pcc/pci and alowing distracting unnessary equipment on a patrol. the vest does work all by itself no reason to supplement with ipods, pda, or anything else

I have to agree with what Scott said and what Cylde had to say not to pass judgement on Apple. We are quick to judge things pretty quickly without knowing the facts. My husband and I are both in the Air Force and he is deployed in Kuwait. I fear for his safety and everyone elses over there. This war has gone on far too long and it has put a strain on marriages, family and friends. It is so hard sometimes to be solely responisble for all bills, and taking care of the house and other everyday things that need to be taken care of. This war needs to end and Bush needs to get the hell out of office. He just does not understand what he is doing to the troops families.

The Apple and their outlets need to be boycotted.
The guys who did work in the stores have been fired to save money by getting rid of the good guys and hiring kids that are underpaid and follow direction to the letter to avoid being fired for replacing an I-Pod.

Apple's protection plan needs to be shot through. The only redeeming factor, as far as I'm concerned, is the helpfulness of most of their apple store personnel. Who cares about the ipod, really? I'm proud of our soldiers and how they're holding up over there. I'm happy that this soldier made it through another day to share that story. He is a hero and he inspires me. God bring them home.

Posted by: Theron at April 13, 2007 02:12 PM

I'm glad the soldier is okay and his gear worked.
I work at a supply agency, and we always want the war fighter to get what he/she needs, before it's needed. It's been my experience, that if a company (like Apple)hears a story like this, they would be more than happy to send him a new free Ipod. I highly doubt that the Ipod actually saved his life. It speaks volumes to how our soldiers endure everyday life. Little things can mean so much. Glad you made it with only the loss of an Ipod.

Posted by: Katie at April 13, 2007 01:41 PM

easy on Apple folks ... the story says "the store" refused to replace it. He could have bought it at a million places, not just Apple. And regardless the store warranty people probably don't know this soldier from a housewife.
It amazes me how easy it is for most folks to immediately pass judgment with little or no information. Use your head before you open yer trap.
And by the way soldier, thank you for your service and glad you suffered no damage, other than to your iPod.

Posted by: Scott at April 13, 2007 12:32 PM

There are indeed reasons for us all to be alive. However, for a very few, the higher power of God has certainly smiled on them to let them know they are the chosen few that were allowed a memento of the miracle of the memory! There is also the reality of the truly devine hand letting these folks know that there is a plan for their life more powerful than any present knowledge. Apple is not worthy of any business sense or prosperity if they don't send the soldier another iPOD. They should fire their whole marketing department if they don't take full rein of this incident and become the department of defense brother in arms and electronics protection pals.

I have a pocket watch that has been proudly displayed in my family since before I was born. The pocket watch has a bullet from World War I embedded in it and it was in the shirt pocket of my great grandfather when he was shot in WWI. The pocket watch enabled me to exist and for my family to be able to tell the tale. My Grandfather, Father and I all followed in his steps by serving in the military, so display it with pride that you 'dodged a bullet'.

Nice bit of fortune and raspberries to Apple...

Not sure why so many are quick to question how he could have missed being hit with a round. His blood was up, He may have reacted to being hit at the time by action, not by conscious thought. Who even says the round hit him square on, it may have been a glancing peripheral shot which hit only the damn Ipod.

I have sat here and read a majority of these comments and for the most part I think we have all missed the mark. Regardless if God exist or not or why he had the I-Pod on his person while on patrol. The fact that he is alive and able to tell the story is what this is all about.
We sit here and pass judgement on each other and forget that we are here because soldiers put their lives on the line so that we are able to be safe in our own land. We can argue about how this war is right or not but in the end it is a voice of one that gets the point across. The voice of one is all of us coming together to voice our objections to what we feel is wrong or right.
I am glad the young man survived and I am happy that his I-Pod took the bullet instead of his vest or chest. It does not matter why he had it with him, it only matters that he is alive. Hopefully all our sons and daughters will come home save and well.
I served 22 yrs and I for one am happy that he has survived what could have left him dead. I don't know if any of you have ever lost someone but, it leaves a emptiness inside that can not be filled.
All of our service members are to be honored and respected regardless of their roll in this conflict. It is their duty to put their lives on the line and I salute them.
Don't forget the reason why we are able to comment here on this forum.
Don't forget who's son or daughter is in harms way and why they are there.
It matters only that they return to us alive.

I'll try to type quickly as I duck & weave through the testosterone that's being tossed around in this exchange;
I'm glad you're not hurt and still here to share what happened. I hope Apple replaced the iPod, even though they didn't tell you take take it into the field... for the billions they have I think it would be a small gesture on their part to someone who is doing, what must sem at times, to be a very thankless job. Not to mention one that you (and so many others) are willing to put your life at risk for.
Boys, keep tossing the testosterone and breaking this guys chops... he's just laughing. ;-)

So he took his I pod with him as soldier boy said as long as he was not listening to it. I have heard of watches, wallets, and magazines stopping bullets just depends on the round and distance.
And as long as they are being shot at and dying they can do what they want with out somebody over here that has never been in that situation running there mouth.

He probably took the iPod with him because you can't set valuables down for 2 seconds over there...they get stolen! Someone stole my rank from my laundry once. Besides who is anyone to judge anyone else by what service they're in? I've seen troops from all different services doing dumb things. Not that I think carrying an iPod in your pocket is stupid as long as he wasn't listening to it while he was outside the wire. So shut your mouth Marine...nobody cares about your opinion.

Ipod should be ashame that they won't replace the ipod. We the military and I myself live with a ipod all day long. The Ipod should become a basic issue for the military.

For any questions about which Bible was written by men...they all were. They are all a translation of The Word Of God. Some may be in a different language, or a different style of speaking, but all are a direct dictation of God's word. Others have said, in previous comments on this page, that the King James Version is the most accuratly translated from the original Arabic, Greek (and Aramaic) languages. I will definetly agree. Regardless, all versions of the written Word of God are all good, and created by Men. Actually, over 30 different authors over a span of nearly 1,500 years, including the New Testament. The objective in all though is to know and understand the rules God has put forth for us to follow and lead a proper Christain life. Without Salvation, all is in vain. Knowing Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior is the only way to live as a true Christian, and be accepted by God into Heaven. Part of that life is learning to ignore non believers banter, and help to save our fellow men. Turn the other cheek.
Without God, there would be no men. Without men, there would be no wars. Without wars, there would be no heroes, or people willing to die for what they believe, and their way of life. God and country, self-sacrifice and selflessness are what built the nation that you all know and love, regardless if you are saved or not. We are all born into sin...but God, through his son Jesus Christ gives us the way to salvation. The only one that matters. iPod's aside, the armor did it's job, and God definetly helped. God does not shout, he whispers. That soldier lived for a reason, and we should all be so lucky to have come that close to knowing what God has done for us.

All the Bible was written by men. The men were inspired by God. The Old Testment books were written in Hebrew and the New Testment books were written in Greek. The Bible has been translated into many languages, and many versions. The King James version was one of the first in the English language to be translated. The American Standard version is proably the most accurate of all translations. In most Bible book stores you can buy a Greek New testament with the English translated above or below the Greek. This is a great help in studying the Bible. Do not be discouraged by e-mail's from those that do not believe God. God is real, he does exist, their is proof, their is evidence. God made us, he made trees, he made all living things. Man can not do those things. In 2 Timothy 2:15 Paul writes to Timothy "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." In 2 Timothy 3:16 "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:" We all need God, and He will help us if we let Him. Those who say that they do not believe in God---will someday!!! I Pray to God that they do not wait to late to Belive, to late to Repent of sins, to late to Confess Jesus before men, and to late to be Baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Rest assure we will all give answer to God for how we have lived our lives on this earth. There is also a Heaven and a Hell. They are real. If you take the time to read and study the Bible you will find, all I have written is true. Sincerely your friend, Mike

I am a wife of a USAF soldier. And I don't seem to understand why as Americans we are so hostile towards one another. Doesn't everyone want the same end result Peace, Happiness and for our family and friend to come home safe. Do you really want to raise your children in a world where there is so much violence and death? Everyday you live your life as though you feel fit. That's fine, thats your choice. But why must you get so upset with someone who is grateful for the good Lord that provides for them. We all have different views. We will never understand why innocent people have to die. Before we are even born our life is planed for us in the eyes of the Lord. He knows our destiny. But it is our choice on weather we live it for him or just for ourself. Living only for yourself is being very selfish. If you don't believe in Christ then what do you believe in? If you believe in the Devil then you have to believe in Christ, because even the Devil believes in God. God created us all in his liking, it is our choice on weather or not we follow him and live by his word. Some of you say that we only Thank God for the good that happens in our life, well if we were all good true Christian that lived everyday by his word then we would also thank him for the trials and tribulations that occur in our life. Why, because it only makes us a stronger Christian. Remember things happen your life for a reason you can't explain it but it does. Also remember one thing Jesus Christ did die for the innocent. He was crucified for all of our sins. He was willing to do that for you and me because he loved us. I praise him everyday for giving his life for me, so I can have eternal life with him in his kingdom. Please know that I am very proud of all of you that serve currently and in the past. As for the iPod, Yes he probably shouldn't have had had it on him. But who cares if he is doing his job and that gives our men and women some comfort from home then I say let them have it. These men and women are out there doing what most of us are not willing to do. They need our support. Can't we just be happy that we have not lost another soldier. Men and Women of our US Military remember one thing. The task ahead of you is never greater than the power behind you. May God watch over each and everyone of you and bring you home safe!!

Truth be known that like the armor or the gadgets we bring with us. Without good military spouses/families trying to stand up for their significant other and the service they are in, we wouldn't have anything to look forward to coming home too. I love the dragon armor and we also are in need of new tactics on this battle field. Besides this, if the enemy gets hold of the giant robot(Mobile Suit, Armored Slave, think of Appleseed, Mechwarrior,Patlabor, etc.)projects going on in certain places around the world (U.S. included),which are being done by civilians(Idea overlooked by the military), we might be outclassed if they get their hands on it. But we could the soldiers who are going to be over there for along time with this new armor and the weapons too. Thanks, Futureweapons for showing the nation this.

Hutchens,

If you want to support the troops, support them in whatever capacity that they need supporting. Just because you want to bring them all home safe and unharmed doesn't mean they want to come home. Let them finish the job they started. When THEY say it's time to go home, it's time to go home. Until then, pray for them, send them care packages, and be there to welcome them when they come home after being relieved by the next set of troops in line to go.

Couldn't tell you how many Marine Gunners I saw riding down Iraqi highways with headphones covering their ears. I've never seen any difference between Marines in combat and Army soldiers in combat. At the end of the day all of us do whatever it takes to bring ourselves and our brothers home. Get over yourselves, Marines. Y'all are human too, and we are all fighting towards the same goal.

To the poster Godwho. Prove there is no God? Prove to me there is not a God. You stated that this god has innocent blood on his hands...how do you come up with the arrogant notion anyone is innocent? By what standard are using the term innocent yours, man's which one. The problem with your logic is that it is not logical. The very fact that you can even reason or consider that there may or may not be a God shows that there is one. The order of the universe, nature and your own function human body should show you some general revelation that there is a God. So I hope this helps clarify that there is a God and by the way He is there and should be thanked and He is not silent...just some people are deaf and dumb. No pun intended.

I agree with Bob...who the hell is your assistant team/squad leader and how did an Ipod make it past your pre-mission inspection? Ask the friends of the 4 man sniper team killed in '04 in Ramadi. Found with their headphones still in their ears on a roof where they were supposed to be conducting an OP. Thanks a lot, Ipod. Don't take toys on patrol! I know personally how miserable ops in 130 degree heat in Al Anbar can be, but if you find yourself bored you should be working on your defensive security plans or drawing field sketches of your objective. When in war, do as warriors do.

I would think that all would be happy for his safety, for this is one less casualty. Please, can we possibly be a little more mature and look towards the positive from this incident, regardless of what branch they are in. It takes the entire force. To all those who don't believe. Remember, that God gave everyone the freedom to choose. Those horrible acts are all the doing of choices by man. Of course, there is also Satan who tries to manipulate us into doing his work. Just because you don't believe doesn't mean God doesn't exist. Paul the apostle spoke on this matter, and not word for word but; "It's inherent in all of us to believe in God, but we choose not to. It is a moral issue that leads to non belief".

From the pictures it looked as if the round DID NOT penetrate the iPod. That means it stopped the iPod. Whether the vest would have or not is outside my paygrade (retired USN, Submariner during Vietnam). I never saw action except as a BAF team member and all we did was shoot targets. We weren't attacked. I still think Apple ought to use this for publicity. Like the old Timex watch, or ballpoint pen commercials, or the bullet through the lock. They all continued to work. Now when the iPod takes a bullet and continues to work, THAT would be a miracle.

Someone also put up a good point is, not everytime, but alot of the times God is the name people bring up when something good happens. "Thank God for this, Thank God for that" Why? Why thank him? If He/She had anthing to do with it then He/She also has the blood of innocent men, women and children on his hands. You can not have it both ways. God is never blamed for the bad things. He was not blames for 9/11, or any IED's in the war. This soldier got lucky with his iPod. Thank the terriost that his aim was so bad.

It's really hard to believe that people forget way to quickly how our country was founded. Nearly every document signed or printed with regard to the foundation of our country has some sort of christian belief or swearing. Why is this country trying to wipe out religion in public. Our government was founded on religious principle, so why does anyone think that the church and state are really going to be separate.

I guess I am just so fed up with the minority loud mouths getting there way because our government representatives won't tell them to shut up or move out of the country.

Amen to what Tom posted. And I fully agree with the troop from the USN. It's truly amazing how America as a whole looks to place blame on anything, but themselves. Instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. I have yet to see an i-pod operating any automobiles. Or cigarettes lighting, and smoking themselves. Or that cheese burger forcing itself down some ones throat. Come on America, get real! Take responsibility for your actions.

Almost everyone here has completely missed the point. The Apple IPod did not save this Marine's life. His IPod was Murdered simply for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. An accidental homicide ~ call it Collateral Damage if will. I do not believe that a higher power was involved at all in this situation.

Picture this: The Almighty, all powerful, omnipitent God giving the Thumbs up or Thumbs down as to whethre or not the IPod lives.

I for one believe that the underlying message of the article is that Apple as a Company sucks and will continue to suck until they step up and do the right thing. Our Armed Forces are putting their lives on the line every second of every day to keep you and everyone else in this country Fat, Dumb, and Happy. Oh and Safe and Secure too.

I would recommend that you not only keep pressing Apple for a replacement IPod, but that you also have a stateside family Lawyer file immediately for a copywrite for your story before Apply uses this as a catalyst to make millions. Stay Safe out there Get Sum!..... and when you come back ~ Get Sum More!

Tom, I have my concerns about socialists, feminists, gays, greens, myriad Stalinists and radical Islam too, well not so much feminists, gays, and greens, I don't see them doing much harm. Feminists and gays are just standing up for their rights, and greens are only harmful when they resort to the tactics of terrorism. At any rate I didn't say the religious right was our only problem but it is a concern of mine that correlates directly to Islamist regimes use of Sharia law. This all off topic to the article being disgusted anyway so I'll drop it here. I read some follow up articles that said Apple has replaced the young man's iPod and they weren't the ones responsible for refusing to replace his first one either. That was the store where he bought it. So give apple a break huh?

the fear of the "religious right" trying to regulate anything pales in comparison to what liberal ideology (socialists, feminists, gays, greens, myriad Stalinists and radical Islam) is accomplishing. Your worries Paul (April 12), are seriously misplaced.

To PFC who wrote on 12 April 07 that electronic gadgets cause countless accidents and deaths every day. I would argue that they don't cause anything. The bone headed owners/users cause those accidents. Hooyah America

What I got from the story was that this was his second iPod. He didn't say what happened to his first iPod, only that they didn't replace it for free despite the fact that he had bought an extended warranty. Don't really know the story there but the moral is skip the extended warranty. As for the existence or not of God, I like to leave that to a personal choice. I do agree with one poster who I can paraphrase as saying organized religion is the root of all evil. The religious right in our country trying to control government policy is as distasteful as Islamist governments imposing Sharia to me. Religion and government cannot be mixed in a diverse population.

Yes, God created the iPod just to save this guy. Doesn't matter that electronic gadgets are responsible for countless traffic accidents and deaths every day.

I'd be pissed that god broke my iPod. The vest would've stopped the bullet just fine by itself. Of all the thousands of troops running around getting shot at, and I bet a hell of a lot of them carry ipods, there was a pretty good chance that an ipod was gonna get a bullet eventually. As for religion, it's like music. You don't need it to live, but if it gets you through the day, who cares.

I read with amazement the postings of ROR about "god talk." As an army chaplain who has been to combat on numerous occasions, let me tell you that you may think you are living in the real world (ala Matrix) my friend, but the truth is everyone if going to die one day whether it is in combat, old age, or accident. It is not how we die but how we live that is important. I for one want to face eternity and God with the knowledge that I serveed the creator of the universe on His terms and not on my own concocted philosophy built on humanism (man as the center of the universe).

The Bible tells us and as it is apponted unto man once to die, then the judgement. Heb 9-27
It just wasn't his time, so GOD PROTECTED him using a ipod. wHAT ABOUT SGT C. WHO GOT SHOT IN THE FACE AT POINT BLANK RANGE WITH A 9MM. THE BULLET EJECTED #8 TOOTH AND WAS STILL LODGED IN THE SOCKET.

Kevin, I will buy you another Ipod. You just tell me where to send it. I have a son and a daughter-in-law who are curently serving their second tour in Iraq. My husband and my brother served (both now retired) in Desert Storm and Desert Shield so I can understand the idea of getting in to a ritual. Keep your eyes up head straight and your ass down. Go Army!

What a lucky break.

But all this talk of 'god' ... cracks me up. Why does god get the credit when something fortuitous happens, but not the blame when half a dozen soldiers are killed by a roadside bomb?

It's called 'filtering' -- you start with a belief that god is watching out for "you" and only recognize the events that further the belief.

Ask the 3000+ families of the dead... or the 27,000+ families of the wounded where 'god was' ... Sh!t happens people: sometimes good, sometimes bad. If you want to convince yourself that some puppet-master in the clouds is pulling the strings -- have at it. I'd rather live in the real world.

The ability of people to delude themselves is amazing.

And...apple can use this as a selling point..."look how strong the iPod is, it stops an AK-47 round"

We must surely thank somone or something (superior armor) that would allow one parties GOD to protect an individual(s) so that he might trump other opponents whom are obviously less technologically and divinely manifested while all attempting to fulfill the mandate of their profession. Safely returning from a good days work with the ability to listen to a plethora or music choices played via quality gadgets is what we wish for all our brave warriors.

I have personally worked on wounded serivce men and women who medically should not be alive today, if it were not for the grace of God. I have also worked on wounded who's injuries were not as serious and whom didn't make it, once again by the grace of God calling them home for a greater purpose.

Thank whomever you want .. (I choose to thank God) that the Ipod has many uses. This is just one more in a long line of them. My husband is there (Iraq) and has one. Photos from home are a wheel spin away. Songs to pass the time and help his mind escape the hell, they are there too. Even a movie to take him away from it all, even if only for a while. And it all fits in this nifty sports band worn on his arm. Good to know his arm has a bit of extra protection on it. if it just had sattelite text messaging (Apple are you listening??) it would be perfect!
Glad you had it with you!! Hopefully Apple replaces it and if not ... well isn't that the way of American business? Sad days ....
Best of luck to you and all our men and women over there... God speed in returning!

That's some awesome evidence of God's grace. No question that someone's looking after us.

REAL QUICK:
Now you got me started. For those who disagree--those who gave their lives, they just went home away from this world. The bottom line is: count your blessings and count it all joy--life, that is. And if you still have doubts, test the Lord for yourself...not with questions that take away the sensitivity of loss, tragedy, suffering, and tribulation. The bottom line is we do this to ourselves everyday and that WILL have a ripple effect on everyone else. You may not think so, but your attitude in life can influence someone else's path. And another, and another, and so on. If that's the case, what do YOU think has happened over the following centuries? Our world is cold because we in our nature want to control it. The misconception of the world spinning around us and that life is about "me" has existed since the very beginning. And the very first thing we do is BLAME--instead of taking responsibility for mistakes, flaws, and so forth. Now God is in the middle of such blame, when in fact we have not allowed him to take command of our lives. Why? Because he's the one who aligns the blurriness of a baby's sight to create memory and therefore the one who determines who lives or dies. Yes, death is cruel, it seems, but it does not invoke reason to blame. It's the last stage of life and even if we yearned to make it to our 80s or even break 120 years, that's not realistic. The truth is that death can occur at any moment and life is nothing but a "vapor in the wind." (Casting Crowns) So what next? It's ok to ask why at times...but instead of expecting a God to give you answers with a loud voice, why don't we just shut up and listen with our hearts? It only makes no sense when you don't LET GO of your OWN reasoning. What will happen is that God WILL speak...not in your time. But if you let him vouch for himself--needing no one to vouch for him--he will settle his peace...one we will never understand in this lifetime. That's called GRACE. Such grace took Jesus of Nazareth to the Skull with his arms stretched out as far as they could go. That's why Easter exists. No man in history has ever took the punishment that Jesus did and no one EVER will cuz it was a one time deal (once and for all). I invite you to take a shot and let him show you what he's made of--and what your made for.

And to my counterpart overseas, count it all joy. That only means God has more work for you. Take it from someone who's brushed with death 3 or 4 times--overseas and garrison. Take it from someone who was a convoy shy of IEDs claiming this life. Take it from someone who lost a friend within weeks into deployment...and the father of a child I now call my own within 30 minutes of each other. Take it from someone who's seen both family members ravaged by diabetes and who's witnessed a father overcome colon cancer. Take it from someone who once believed wholeheartedly in Christ's atonement, who turned away and lived for himself, who refused to believe for hurts caused in my life, and who found himself in the midnight hour running back to the very same Christ who is alive and well in charge.

Keep the faith. Peace.

Please don't expect a reward or even a thank you of any substance from an American company. Our own V.A. won't even take care of these guys. I can't imagine how you could possibly compensate this young man for what he is doing and the same goes for all his buddies, before and after. Most American companies could not care less. My sincere wish is that these guys receive gratitude from so many "ordinary" Americans (the best kind) and veterans that they won't come to realize how little the companies who couldn't exist without them fail to appreciate them.

Get some! Get some, iPod! Question: How can you just shoot an iPod like that? Answer: Easy, you just don't lead it as much..." Seriously, I'm glad to hear that Devil Dog was OK. I know you have to focus on what's important, and count your blessings, etc. However, I would have been pissed if the only thing I had to look forward to after a fire-fight was some tunes, and I didn't even get that privilege. If he didn't already get the guy that did it, I would have went back out that night, found the worthless sand-snake, and gave him a beat to dance to. Courtesy of a 30 round magazine. I hope someone upgrades the priority, and expedites shipment on that iPod. That's a critical piece of gear in theater. Keep Chargin'!

If this guy was wearing updated armor and a round still managed to do that much pinpoint damage to the IPod, then I am not the least bit impressed with the armor we are giving our troops. If his IPod was on the outside of his armor then it is perfectly logical that he didn’t pay that much attention to the impact. The IPod would have slowed the bullet a great deal and by the time it hit the armor the impact would have included the footprint of the IPod and would have felt more like his equipment shifting or bumping into something… When someone is shooting at you, you don’t stop to look for such trivial things.
I can’t say I’m overly impressed with Ipods "service" either. These men and women are an example of the best this nation has to offer, and they deserve better than IPod turning their back on our service members. (For those of you who skimmed this story - Ipod refuse to honor the extended warrantee that was purchased by this soldier on his FIRST IPod). I will concede that a round to the trinket is hardly a warrantee item, however his service to this nation is more than sufficient to justify an exception and it is still a tax deduction for IPod/Apple.

Posted by: Quixote at April 11, 2007 04:29 PM

Its good to know that the young marine is alive and kicking. I wonder if Apple will use this to advertise how robust their IPod's are. If they do, that young marine should get a cut of the action. Considering he put his life on the line to find this out.

Amen to the Government Hacks having to do a 'Tour of Duty' (a real one! not rear echolon pukes) in order to be able to become a legislator and suck at the National Udder. TERM LIMITS FOR ALL! (and short at that!) As for the Ipod armor. I thank God with a BIG G, for bringing a soldier back home with no more hole than when he went out. As for non-believers, keep it to yourself. Don't ask, don't tell. For over 2007 years, we have believed. Billions of believers (of what ever God) can't be too far wrong. But, what the h*** does that have to do with being saved by body armor? Anything for a religous argument. In some ways, that's what your fighting stupid! Don't start another.

There is indeed a God and he has many names, the problem really lies in mans continual interpretational changes based on the different religions. Organized religion is the problem. Believe in what you want but be careful of those preaching something that is too good to be true; no matter where it is coming from or what it is about. Been there, done that with the bad boy turned God fearing Christian that finally woke up one day and realized that OR (organized religions) are designed for weak minded people who are easy to brain wash!!! Don’t kid your selves, brainwashing is a real thing and affects us all in one way or another.

Hmmm.... very interesting thought "thereisnogod" - but unfortunately not very original, nor accurate!! I was not brainwashed from birth - as I did not decide to live for God until my early 20's.

No agruement on me being "brainwashed" though - in fact more than just my brain has been washed - my soul has as well!

From a dope smoking punk kid always in trouble with no cares in the world - to an actual productive individual in society - a veteran no less - and YES - I give God ALL that credit - anybody honest with themselves would admit they CHOOSE not to change on their own - but with God you have the ability to overcome.

Okay - sorry for the "preaching"....

Glad the Soldier / Marine was safe - thank you GOD!!! Ans small kudos to iPod! ;)

To: there is no God!

You have a pre-conceive notion that because bad things happened there can't possibly be a God. God created you and everybody with a free will. You can choose to do good or bad, to believe or not. But like with everything else there are consequences. Get into a car accident, don't wear a seat belt, get thrown out of the car and you die. Is that God's fault? The devil has blinded the world with sleek advertising, love with out consequences, do what you want, eat, drink and be merry mentality. After 40 years of this way of thinking you sound surprise that there is strive in the world, that people are cruel and without remorse that bad things are happening to innocent people. God has given us hope in a Savior that won't forsake or leave you. A Savior that will right the wrongs committed against you in this life. Put you faith and hope in Jesus the Christ, the son of God not in this world or what it has to offer. You will find the justice and righteousness that you seek. About being born in the middle east, there are, and have being Muslim that became Christians at a cost of there lives and their families. In the middle east if you are a Christian your family throws you out of their house. Why do they convert and choose to live with out their family support or love? Once you understand the Love that God has for you, that he send His son, Jesus, to die on the Cross, for your sins as well as the sins of the world. You will understand that this is a message that the world needs right now, specially in the middle east.

If we were born in Saudi Arabia and We were chosen by God to be a Christian then we would become Christian. God IS still saving people all over the world. There isn't anyone that is too far out of the reach of the Triune God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit).

As a Veteran and currently a technical analyst this is what I get out of this picture and story. The bullet appears to strike at an angle. His body armor may have never felt it. The Ipod would be located less than 10 inches from non armored area's (neck, head, arm pit etc). Depending on position the bullit passed very close to a probable death or loss of limb. The Ipod serves to me the message of how close death is and that God is giving us many second chances. If Kevin has a relationship with God (has accepted Jesus as his savior) he should talk to God about his future. If not He better talk to God about his future. Kevin may God give you many more chances.

Posted by: Mike Russell at April 11, 2007 11:50 AM

I definitely think it is possble for an Ipod to stop a bullet. Consider for instance 7.62 rounds that have traveled long distances or have ricocheted off of another surface. All these factors lead to rounds traveling with diminshed force and thereby diminshed penetrating power. While it is undoubted that a 7.62 would blow right through an ipod at point blank range not all bullets on the battle field are traveling at this velocity. I say good for ipod but as a soldier I would take more comfort from the body armor that lay beneath this soldier's ipod.

Mark, you are correct in that his armor plate would have stopped the round anyway, but don't be too quick to discount the effect that something as small as an Ipod can have on a bullet. Also, I have absolutely no doubt that he did not know he had been hit. I have seen guys that did not know they were shot until they saw the blood, or someone told them. That is why one of the first things you do after a fire fight is check yourself and your buddies for injuries.
