Bashar Bashes the Competition

Assad-web.jpg

Defense Tech would like to be the first in the blogosphere to congratulate Syrian “president” Bashar Assad on his stunning landslide victory for another seven years as ruler of Syria.

How he eeked out a 97 percent victory in an electoral field devoid of competition is the biggest mystery. Maybe it was his four-point healthcare plan or the Baath party's “green” energy agenda?

Nearly 12 million Syrians voted in the “referendum” – a whopping 19,000 voted against Assad. What were they thinking?

As AFP points out: "With parliament having unanimously approved Assad's candidature and with vocal opponents of the regime locked up, the result was never in doubt."

...Kinda takes all the fun out of the whole election thing, though, doesn't it.

Well, I'm only making fun of him because of his actions. If he was the president or prime minister of a democratic and/or free nation, I wouldn't get a kick out of poking fun of his appearance.

As for his 97% victory; a reporter for a newspaper, I believe it was called The Sun, not only couldn't find anyone who voted against him, they couldn't find anyone who voted at all!

Posted by: Jay at May 30, 2007 12:33 PM

uhmmm make that 2000. I was still in awe about his glorious victory I guess.

Posted by: pieter at May 30, 2007 04:39 AM

Hey his daddy died in 2007 and he is still around. That means he is a tough cooky. I sincerely congratulate him with this glorious victory.

@Jonathan; Syria has oil, but not enough to have net exports.

The only thing about Syria that's relevant for international security are the Golan heights and Lebanon.

Syria's Golan Heights are still occupied by Irsrael, so there's only a ceasefire and no peace between these states.
Syria is engaged in Lebanon's internal affairs although it had some severe setbacks in the past years there.
Furthermore, it's ruled by the Ba'ath party just like Iraq was and the west should not destabilize the Syrian regime if he wants to avoid a second Iraq...Syria has even more minorities and internal divisions than Iraq.
Lebanon > Syria > Iran > Iraq is the order of internal division problems in the region.

Hey, at least they had an election - in the UK, we don't get to choose our head of state or our Prime Minister.

It really does look like he came out of someone's toilet.

Posted by: Alex at May 30, 2007 12:29 AM

Well, if the Iraqi war proved onething, sometimes countries need a hard assed bastard to keep everyone in check. it is the only thing they understand. Anyway, as syria doesn't have any oil the only threat to America is Syria taking advantage of the situation as America gets out of Vietnam and getting access to all that oil through its own defacto groups

hey, where's the footage on that new rocket of Russia?

Posted by: fronten at May 29, 2007 05:42 PM

LOL! Something seems fishy here... The U.S. needed to send Jimmy Carter over there to 'observe' the election. Maybe, then I'd believe 97%. ;)

Jay,
You basically described Hitler (IMHO).

When I read "97%" I was thinking "Dictator" right away....

Posted by: Foreign.Boy at May 29, 2007 04:37 PM

I can understand how people are willing to stand behind a dictator like Castro or Saddam, but this guy looks like an absolute douche, who would follow him? He reminds me of the type of guy who is very creepy and socially awkward but tries to gain acceptance by throwing money around. Maybe I just answered my own question.
