San Fran Again

Marines-Corps Seal Plaque M.jpgFirst USS Iowa. Then high school ROTC. Then the Blue Angels. Now the US Marine Corp. How much more dis'in can the US Military take from the city and 'burbs by the bay?

A new advertising campaign by the Marine Corp has a their Silent Drill Team (an absolutely amazing display of precision and discipline) being filmed at various places around the US. You can see the products here.

When they wanted to film, on September 11 no less, on California Street in downtown San Francisco, the group was denied a permit to film. While initial inquiries by the press to Stefanie Coyote, the executive director of the San Francisco Film Commission, received the "unavailable to comment" response, Coyote later said to KGO-TV that "traffic control was the issue."

"Traffic control".

So what did the Marines do? They went to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area for the final segment of its "America's Marines" TV commercial then proceeded to New York City and filmed at Times Square where, apparently, traffic is less of an issue that in San Fran.

Yet another slap in the face of the US Military by a shrill anti-military area or a prudent exercising of civil traffic control by sage city elders?

You decide.

Man sf is just full of liberal assholes. they have no respect for shit thats why that town is a dump. all the usmc wanted was the golden gate bridge in the background... on fox news they talked about this and then they showed a clip of the gay tolerance bs that they show on tv there. its bs. i dont understand these liberal views. its ok to show gay guys walking in the streets half naked making out and wearing thongs on public broadcast but they wont show any military adds.. unbeleivable

I personally think that wel Sf is a liberal town who have their heads up their asses. it's a town of sin. That raibow flag says it all. I am a future marine. I have less then a year and well i am sad to say i have visited San Francisco because it is led by liberalistic pigs whom hate the military and dont realize that without the Military and The arines and Navy their harbor would be sitting ducks for an attack.

Close the bases in SF area, move troops to other bases or re estd those in Sacramento???
Or expand NG & Reserve Units more.
Why bother defending the Bay area.
Move the USS Hornet to LA CA near Queen Mary Center LB?
Reuse Alameda Naval Base for a Multi Use complex for SF area ( non defense).
Make Presidio a Museum for the Bay area Military force etc.
Reuse the Presidio for:
Movie & TV Use
Fine Arts
Warehouses
Retail
Motel
B&B Inn
Archieve
Library
Gun Range?
Yoga Center
Marina?
PD Jail Center.

Thanks Bay Area, wed know U care.

I am an almost lifelong resident of California. I spent most of my active duty time in California with the exception of training which took place in Tennessee.

I, undoubtedly, encountered more hostile prejudice in Tennessee for simply being a Californian then I ever did (and I don't recall ever) for being a service person in Northern California.

News stories like this only serve the rabid anti-liberal anger merchants and to exercise divisiveness.

I am a proud Liberal, a proud Californian, and a proud Veteran. Best of all worlds!

We might be few but U see us on the bay watching are brave men every year, Its just to hard to talk to the people that know all the answers and what to due. so were underground but were here.

From a SF Native:

Since when has the city ever given a damn about traffic? When it comes to anti war marches , critical mass or open boarders marches its all good and be damned if you have to get to or home from work.

So before you toss out your SF resident BS just because you moved here doesn’t make it your city.

As a life long 3 generation San Franciscan I’m disgusted by the actions of the city.

This use to be a proud military city until the moonbats moved in and ruined it.

Is it me or does besmirching the name of an entire region because of the actions of a few people seem, well, silly?

I doubt you wouldn't find one or two people from any region in this country who may behave in a way that is offensive to one group or another. For example, a few young men from the Navy were seated in front of me & my wife at Yankee Stadium a while back. These young men continually harassed beer vendors to get free beer for their "service to the country"... never mind that these "men" looked to be fresh out of high school and that their blatent attempts at invoking 9-11 as a reason to get free beer at a basball game in NY was in extremely poor taste. They also continually referred to a Yankee player (Hideki Matsui) as a "Jap", squinted their eyes, and spoke with mock-Japanese accents, much to the dismay of several Asian families seated nearby.

Now, how foolish would I be to condemn the entire Navy, the Navy my father served with during WWII, for the behavior of these three men? Pretty darn foolish, wouldn't you say?

gee, the left giving shit to the military? That's soooo surprising *rolls eyes*

Two points from an SF resident:

1.) Depending on the street and the time of day I can absolutely believe that there would be traffic issues, that might not exist in NY. It's likely the big difference is that the Marines picked a comparatively lower traffic street in NY (I imagine they were going for recognizability when they filmed, and they didn't really take traffic into account).

2.) The legislation to ban the Blue Angels has been voted down overwhelmingly despite media whore supervisor Chris Daly trying to bring it up twice. See here.

Of course that kind of info would get in the way of your LIBRULZ HATE TEH MILITARY!!!!!!!!1!11one BS so you ignore it.

Democrats dont hate the soldiers, in fact i would say most of them really appriciate what they do. But the democrat leaders all hate soldier, and everything a soldier stands for. So until thoose guys get kicked out of office, and stop spewing there garbage, democrats are all lumped into the Anti War crowd. if they dont like that, then they better elect some good polititions cus there are few Demo polititions that accually support the the troops and what a soldier stands for.

When I was stationed at Fort Ord, CA long ago, and when I was a patient at Letterman Army Medical Center-also long ago- I never felt any kind of ill treatment anywhere the SF Bay area. Most people were thankful and respectful, and more than one person would offer to buy a cup of coffee or a beer for a soldier. The myth that the left wing hates our soldiers is just that, a myth. I've only ever met one stupid young man in college who fit that stereotype, and nobody paid attention to him anyway. I've met more than my fair share of conservatives here in Oklahoma whose attitude about the military is 'better you than me.' Another point, from someone who interned in City Hall in a decent sized mid-western city--you might have a case here of a civil servant who decided that the payback in tourist dollars from a few seconds of video on a commercial isn't the same as the payback from multiple scenes in a summer blockbuster when the city will pay tens of thousands of dollars for overtime to SFPD for coverage of this event. At least a movie compay will pay the bill the city demands.

"the city and 'burbs by the bay"

Hey! Don't drag us burbs in there. The radical left live in SF, Berkeley, and Oakland. The rest of us are merely normal left-of-center.

A favorite memory: when Jerry Brown was mayor of Oakland he gave the military permission to perform various exercises there over the strenuous objections of the anti-military crowd. He said a country has to have a military, and those in uniform would risk their lives for us if need be, and therefore the least we could do is let them practice so they might not die. It's nice that some in the left have brains.

Citizens,

Re: refusal of filming permit for U.S. Marine Corp, on California Street, on Sept 11.

Please note that the above referenced military organization has, as part of it's official name; "United States". I wish you to be reassured, that "United States" does, and will continue to, include the city of San Francisco, California; and, that the United States Marine Corp (motto "Semper Fidelis", or "Always Faithful"), will continue to protect and serve all the citizens of that fair city....despite your political effrontery.

In the future, perhaps it would be of help if you were made aware that this particular branch of the military, does indeed, have military police that are somewhat experienced in traffic control; should that still be an issue with you.

thank you, citizens (alas)

my brother, a marine captain in iraq, requested a state flag from governor Schwarzenegger (my brother was stationed at camp pendelton) to mount in the mess hall next to many other US state flags (states with representative troops in iraq that sent flags, often with a plaque stating that it had been flown over the state house). A response letter from the governors office told him he should buy a flag.
