Marines Being Marines

Killing time at the combat outpost...

-- Christian

Camera off guys! You think you would have learned that by now. Thank God you have vests on.

Thanks for serving.

You pray who you want, but sure I'm French.
My speech is not to argue that our troops are better then yours or another. Of course we have dumbass, psycho or unnecessary people too.
So when I see this fucking taliban who take pictures with the items they have stolen to ours killed soldiers, I think that communication is an another line of front. And with this kind of movie we loss ground. No more.

Posted by: GreG at November 19, 2008 02:24 PM

I can't believe the people here who are claiming that all soldiers and marines are this stupid.
They're not.
And anyone who would trust their lives to an idiot -- is also an idiot. Messing around with loaded firearms is not the act of a professional, and I can't see why you would expect them to be any smarter in action.

Posted by: Wembley at November 17, 2008 12:18 PM

Ever wondered where the term "Died from non-combat related injuries...." comes from?

Posted by: CR at November 17, 2008 12:17 PM

Greg is as much French as I am a practicing satanist and you don't see no horns on me. I was a liaison officer with the French military and the people I was with I would have happliy sat in a gun pit with.

As for the horseplay with the M9, some Marines are in for a whole lot of extra duties. The dumb fucks forgot the Eleventh Commandment - 'Thou shall not get caught. This supercedes the preceding ten'. I have never been one to screw around with firearms, loaded or otherwise.

Posted by: tontochoc at November 17, 2008 10:02 AM

TDS4S hit the nail on the head.

As a platoon leader, I would have had no choice but to stop stuff like this if I were present but I knew my guys might have done stuff like this when I or another SNCO wasn't around.

All you can do as a leader is remind them that this is how parents end up getting a folded flag and a visit from the brass with condolences.

There is utopia and there is the real world. These guys are living in the real world. No - they wouldn't have a leg to stand on if something went wrong but it is what it is.

Joes will be Joes (in this case Marines)and I would still want them on my side any day of the week.

PS- folks need to stop acting so shocked and accept that young fighting men will be EDGY and at times unnecessarily unsafe.

Posted by: Jimbo at November 17, 2008 06:22 AM

Wow. Stupid. No big deal right? These boys deserve a little fun. Until the first one accidentally gets bumped with the muzzle against the roof of his mouth, and now we have a dead marine, ART 15s all around, and a new toy for the media. Our wartime situation is fragile enough without the American public thinking less of its military's muzzle discipline.

I wonder what their Gunny is having them do now? Really, I won't pretend I didn't do stupid things up until I was junior NCO (I admit I was promoted too fast to Sgt), but you can be damned sure I didn't do it with cameras rolling. Since we are a video nation now, this kind of goofing off is just going to get harder and harder to do without it biting you in the rear. That SHOULD discourage horseplay even more in the future, but it is up to the NCOs to keep things from getting as surreal as the environment.

Posted by: SMSgt Mac at November 16, 2008 09:23 PM

I don't see the problem with the video. I would trust these guys with my life. You honestly think they are any different than any other US soldier during any other war? You think the guys in WWII just sat around playing cards? Hell no, stuff got interesting. Just be thank full they aren't going around sodomizing sheep or testing out their armor with live fire. As to the French gentleman. There is a reason why you make fun of your military, its cause it has a horrible track record, try winning a war and it will stop.

Posted by: Xaldian at November 16, 2008 08:48 PM

Doing something really stupid? Make sure the cameras are off/

Posted by: Jack D. Ripper at November 16, 2008 08:43 AM

With my sense of humor I could argue that if even a Frenchie feel worry with this video it's really a problem.
And amazingly Us citizen seems to agree with me.

More seriously, I don't think that you take care of the nationality of the men on your side when you are under the same fire; like yours and ours on a-stan. French problem reside more in politics than really in military capabilities and I don't post to insult anyone or even compare Us military to anyone else due to the technical, financial, numerous gap with every other countries.

But like I fell shame for us when Us troops march past on the Champs Elysee at WWII victory celebration under whistle, I feel shame for you when I see a video like this, destroying the attempt to support you on this side of the pound.
This guys could be russian, chinese or even french I will post the same comment. You don't do this with firearms. Never.
Particularly in my place of birth we knows what we owe to Us Soldiers. But time passed since WWII when my grandfather shared the few coffee he had with G.I of the 5th Infantry Division on his home.
And never ours troops on the field (suez, dien bien phu, algeria...) dishonoring their uniforms.
I won't write the same with politicians...
You could think what you want but don't miss your real foe in this "green war".

Posted by: Greg at November 16, 2008 02:21 AM

"facepalm", as my kids say.

these are the guys that I would have to keep an eye on in my section-- good in a fight, but also likely to get us in one. sad fact of it is that physically brave 20-year-olds are pretty cheap, smart ones are a little harder to find.

Posted by: Mike at November 15, 2008 02:41 PM

I would trust my life and country with these Marines
over any of those posting negative comments about them.

They are the real deal and are comfortable about it.

Only the "fans" and "wannabe's" would say anything else.

Go Marines!

Posted by: Joe at November 15, 2008 12:18 PM

Yes. They are fucking idiots. And if they are anything like the fucking idiots I served with, then you can count on them when the shooting starts more than you can count on the kids who passed the hours racked out or with their iPod jamming hip hop into their heads. What do you think was going on in the barracks before Normandy or in the ships' holds before Iwo Jima? A lot of brige and pinocle? (Not the French barracks of course... they were full of Germans, take my point, GreG?) Some or all of these kids will grow up to be platoon daddies, realize how stupid they were as E2s, and keep a closer eye on their soldiers for it. The most irresponsible thing of all was posting this on Defense Tech. It doesn't further the website's mission and it might get these kids into trouble. Nice job.

Posted by: TDS4S at November 15, 2008 12:03 PM

fucking idiots

Posted by: BEC at November 15, 2008 10:39 AM

You folks complaining about these kids are the ones who can't wait for a nanny state. Maybe not the sharpest thing ever done but certainly not the crime or dishonor so many of you say it is. Get a sense of humor. I bet those kids are good to go when it counts.

Posted by: Engage at November 15, 2008 08:57 AM

We see this video, but does anybody know if any ramifications occurred as a result? Is there a rest of the story here as far as UCMJ goes?

Posted by: Roy Smith at November 15, 2008 06:12 AM

If anyone can't talk about US soldiers no matter what, it is the French. Go crawl back into your hole and stop thinking you can turn your nose up to the United States military, the worst of which still puts your pathetic military to shame.

Posted by: kaltes at November 15, 2008 02:53 AM

I'm French LO agent and for the first time I post here.
I read here before that french army sucks, are cowards, are sissies blablabla... but during my duty and actually I had never seen something so stupid.
But more awful is to see this on a military forum.
This dumbass video will put pitiful opinion to neutral people and will be a great opportunity for all morons who are allergic to uniform or middle east engagement.
This kind of behaviour deserve every people who serves.

Posted by: GreG at November 15, 2008 01:55 AM

This is one of several reasons I got out of the military after 10 years of service. These new kids are nuts and don't give a rat's ass about weapons safety or the image that they should be projecting 24/7 whether on camera or off! I'm just shocked that more of them aren't coming back in body bags due to "friendly fire." Don't get me wrong. We had our share of dirty bags back in the day, but ... we made sure that they didn't last long or were taken out of harms way.

Posted by: mad dog at November 14, 2008 11:42 PM

First off, these are not soldiers, these are Marines. Sadly they are not acting like Marines. This is embarrrasing for the Corps, and these individuals. This video give the Marine Corps, and the country a bad name.

There is no excuse for this behavior, no matter where you are. Why the F would you treat a weapon like a toy? Even worse a loaded weapon. They ignored every weapon safety rule the Corps has.

I understand being shot at is stressful beyond belief, but why do people find it funny to film themselves being stupid? And then post it on the internet.

These Marines should be punished, and made an example of. One, you never treat weapons like this. Don't post this stuff where other people can see.

Posted by: Will at November 14, 2008 11:03 PM

When I was a little kid, my dad taught me two very important lessons: 1) A gun is not a toy and 2) never point a gun at anything you don't intend to kill. That advice has saved my life and the life of men around me. Why these guys were never taught respect for the firearms they carry is beyond me. Has the service really become this lax?

And if anyone calls this the results of boredom, I call BS. The results of boredom are card playing, driving stuff through swamps until they get stuck, streaking, practical jokes and other dumb, harmless things. Sticking the end of a weapon in your mouth then discharging it at a fellow soldier is simply outrageous.

Posted by: bdwilcox at November 14, 2008 10:38 PM

I remember when I was stationed at White Sands Missile Range(in this instance,I was transferred to William Beaumont Army Medical Center but came back to visit "the old gang") a bunch of people from the old barracks caught & tarantula & set it on fire & was huddled around watching it burn). Come on,extreme boredom makes people do extremely stupid things. The worse these young men might get is an Article 15 & possibly a reduction in rank. They're in a combat outpost & do not have the luxuries that the "Fobbits" have. Being a former soldier in "peacetime" during the 80's,I remember just as crazy stunts we pulled. What else do you expect from the troops in "wartime."
Where's the crazy Sergeant Major like on "Generation Kill" correcting them on their "grooming standards" when you need him?

Posted by: Roy Smith at November 14, 2008 10:26 PM

Sad this has been made public. sad because good men will get disciplined for these actions. Sad also that they did not know enough or have the sense to not video the event.

Posted by: Mark at November 14, 2008 09:33 PM

Why do you need to post this stuff?

What is your point? How junior enlisteds act like pure idiots?

Come on guys, elevate the discourse!

Posted by: Richard at November 14, 2008 08:04 PM

nice to see they have some down time. AND they are not comporting themselves any different than a gang of unsupervised paratroopers.

When the cat aka the E-7, is away, well you get the picture.

Let those who have never been an E-2 skeeter wing joe snuffy gripe.

Posted by: Joe at November 14, 2008 07:50 PM

Soldiers dealing with the boredom of war. Young men putting their lives on the line are above the criticism of the internets. relax people...

Posted by: tango at November 14, 2008 07:14 PM

WoW! What a waste of US money and equipment! Wouldn't classify them as real soldiers, only real wastes.

Posted by: Chris at November 14, 2008 06:14 PM

See, it's with stuff like this that the Marines loose the credibility required to say things like "Uh oh, someone gave the [Coasties/Zoomies/Squids/other military punching bag of choice] rifles!"

Posted by: TrustButVerify at November 14, 2008 06:12 PM

That's why Beretta's don't work right over there they keep screwin around with em.

Posted by: WJS at November 14, 2008 05:46 PM

Amateurs play with firearms; idiots play with loaded firearms.

Posted by: Cerberus at November 14, 2008 05:36 PM
